Sociology is the most Generalist Subject. I provided unique insights to me about structure and working of Society beyond the Common-sense perspective. The Subject is very much relatable to Current Social, Economic, Political, Cultural facts. Its relatedness to Static and Current Topics of General Studies provides scope for writing Unique Answers in Optional. It immensely helps in General Studies and Essay Papers. Other good thing about subject is availability of Teachers and Mentors, Study Material and Consistent Performance of the subject.
My Suggestion to Freshers.
I would like to Suggest the freshers to opt Sociology if you are interested in understanding the interplay of various aspects of the Society. If you are interested in understanding the interrelationship between different structures of the society i.e. Family, Economy, Polity, Education Religion etc., You will easily grasp the Subject. You know much about the working of society. You will have simply relate it to Concept , Theories and Social Facts.
Never get in trap of Online Web Portals and Telegram Channels. There are mushrooming of Websites and YouTube Channels. Lots of Unnecessary innovations are being done by Online Content Creators. My suggestion to all freshers is to read Basic Books or Notes prepared by any Expert Faculty of Sociology. Many times Students asks me regarding books of Sociology for UPSC referred by me, as Suggested by UPSC Toppers. But trust me Guys, I did not refer any Books or Notes apart from NCERT Books & Triumph IAS Printed notes and Class Notes. So I dont want to confuse you by referring list of Books as done by many UPSC Toppers.
Study Material for Me

=Sociology Paper 2- Triumph IAS Booklets of Paper 2(Total Four Booklets)
=Class Notes & Discussions of Vikash Ranjan Sir @ Triumph IAS.
=Previous Year Question Papers.
Tried to revise these things as much as possible and contextualizing them with Contemporary & Current Affairs as Suggested by Vikash Ranjan Sir.
Role of Current Affairs in Sociology Optional
Though Sociology is not Current Affairs, but there are good scope to refer current social facts briefly in 4 to 5 sentence in Sociology Answers related to Current Developments. At present more Current related Questions are being asked in Paper 2. But one should be careful in answering such questions. You should write more Sociological Concepts and Theories in analysis of Such Questions than simply writing the Current Affairs. For example in questions on MeToo and Triple Talaq asked in Mains 2018, I wrote more Sociological Concepts and Perspective than the Current Facts.
One should not read Current Affairs Separately for Sociology. But while reading Current affairs for General Studies, You should mark the relevant Current Development related to Sociology Syllabus. A Brief Reference of Current affairs Enrich the answers and gives the contemporary context to theoretical questions.
Vikash Sir had Provided me the Concise and Brief Content on Sociology related Current Facts. It was an Extract from Yojna, Kurukshetra, Economic and Political Weekly and Newspapers.
Time Frame for Sociology Preparation
I prepared sociology in 3 and half Months. I did take help of Coaching class to Complete it on time , before my Mains 2018. I could complete it thoroughly because of Support of My Mentor for Mains Vikash Ranjsn Sir. I Continiously followed him outside class too for clarifying my doubts.
But I will suggest freshers to dedicate atleast 4 to 5 Months for Preparation of Sociology. Contribution of Optional, Particularly Sociology optional is very high in the final Selection. One should first prepare Optional and then Mains GS. Sociology Optional & Essay fetch equal marks to that of General Studies.
Importance of Answer Writing Practice
I started answer writing rigorously after completion of my Class. Because of Paucity of time I had to write Two Tests of Sociology per Week. I followed Vikash Sir's Feedback and Suggestions religiously which benefitted me immensely.
I will advise everyone to do rigorous answer Writing Practice. One must do answer writing practice after completing the syllabus and should get the expert feedback. I feel myself to be lucky that I got mentorship of Vikash Ranjan Sir. Regular feedback from him on my Performance in Answer Writing greatly helped me in understanding my strengths and weaknesses.
How to Make Notes for Sociology
I had made detailed hand-written notes on A4 sheets for optional and revised it multiple times. I made notes of the class lectures of Vikash Sir. Supplemented my notes with the printed notes of Triumph IAS. Insights for Content relevant to Exam you get from the Previous Year Question Papers. Refer to Question Papers on regular basis, before reading any topics and after reading the topic.
How did you Analyse Nature of Questions in Sociology Optional in 2018 ?
70 to 80 Percent of the Sociology Questions are always predictable. In 2018 too the difficulty level of mains paper was more or less moderate. In Paper 2 Questions were related to Current Social Changes and Issues, but Such Questions require Sociological Analysis. One should cover the basics Sociological Concepts and Facts thoroughly and complement contextualizing from current affairs.
Role of Coaching in Your Preparation
Coaching helped me greatly in covering the whole syllabus in time bound manner. Many toppers refer list of books for Sociology and General Studies. But trust me, I did not refer any of the books Suggested by many Toppers, i.e. Sociology by Harlambos, Ritzer etc. I referred NCERT Class 12 & 11 Books and Triumph IAS Printed Notes. Made my own Notes in 150 pages from the Class Lectures of Vikash Sir and Printed notes.
One should Join Coaching on the basis of Teachers Experience and Expertise. One should not Join any coaching on the basis of its Corporate building or Corporate Culture. One should look for a Teacher who is hard working and Available to address the doubts in course of Preparation. I was lucky to get Mentorship of Vikash SSir.He is always Available and Accessible to his Students.
