This proposition is not merely rhetorical; it reflects the lived reality of states that have successfully leveraged innovation to enhance economic prosperity, strategic autonomy, and societal resilience. However, while science and technology are indispensable instruments, their effectiveness as a “panacea” depends on the social, ethical, institutional, and political contexts within which they operate. Thus, an informed assessment must examine how science and technology contribute to national growth and security, while also recognizing their limitations and the need for holistic integration with human values and governance.

Technological advancement increases productivity by enabling more output from the same inputs, thereby enhancing efficiency across sectors.
  • In agriculture, scientific innovations such as high-yield variety seeds, precision farming, biotechnology, and irrigation technologies have transformed subsistence economies into food-surplus nations. India’s Green Revolution stands as a testament to how scientific inputs, when combined with institutional support, can ensure food security and stimulate rural growth. Similarly, advancements in industrial technology, automation, and artificial intelligence have redefined manufacturing, enabling countries to integrate into global value chains and compete internationally.
  • Moreover, science-driven sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, space technology, and renewable energy have emerged as high-value engines of growth. The digital economy, built upon advances in computing, telecommunications, and data science, has not only generated employment but also democratized access to markets, finance, and information.   • At the same time, cyber security has emerged as a critical pillar of national security. As economies and governance systems become digitally integrated, vulnerabilities to cyber-attacks increase. Scientific expertise in cryptography, network security, and artificial intelligence is therefore essential to protect critical infrastructure, financial systems, and democratic institutions. Thus, science and technology function as both shields and swords in safeguarding national sovereignty.
  • In the twenty-first century, security must also be understood in ecological terms. Climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation pose existential threats that transcend borders. Here again, science and technology offer pathways toward sustainable security. Renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, and hydrogen power, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate geopolitical vulnerabilities associated with energy imports.
  • Similarly, scientific research in climate modeling, disaster management, and sustainable agriculture enhances adaptive capacity and resilience. Early warning systems for natural disasters, enabled by satellite and sensor technologies, save lives and reduce economic losses. Environmental security, therefore, is inseparable from technological innovation, reinforcing the argument that science and technology underpin long-term national stability.
  • However, sustainability also demands ethical restraint and ecological sensitivity. Technological solutions that ignore social and environmental costs can exacerbate inequalities and ecological crises. Hence, science must be guided by the principles of sustainable development, integrating economic growth with social justice and environmental stewardship.
  • While science and technology provide tools for growth and security, they are not value-neutral forces. Nuclear technology, for example, offers energy security but also poses catastrophic risks if mismanaged.   • Yet, persistent challenges such as unequal access to technology, underinvestment in research and development, and the brain drain of scientific talent underscore the need for structural reforms. To fully realize science and technology as a panacea, India must strengthen its education system, promote scientific temper as envisioned by the Constitution, and foster collaboration between academia, industry, and the state.
