- For the year 2020, Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre, Uttarakhand (in the institution category) and Shri Kumar Munnan Singh (Individual category) have been selected for the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar for their commendable work in Disaster Management.
About:
- In case the winner being an institution, it shall receive a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 51 lakhs.
- This cash prize shall be utilized by the winning institution for Disaster Management related activities only.
- In case of the winner being an individual, winner shall receive a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs.
- It may be recalled that for the year 2019, 8th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) located at Ghaziabad, had been selected for the award for its commendable work in disaster management.
World Employment and Social Outlook 2020
Why in news?
- Global unemployment is projected to increase by around 2.5 million in 2020 and almost half a billion people are working fewer paid hours than they would like or lack adequate access to paid work, according to UN’s International Labour Organization report.
Key facts
- The World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2020 (WESO) report states that, global unemployment has been roughly stable for the last nine years but slowing global economic growth means that, as the global labour force increases, not enough new jobs are being generated to absorb new entrants to the labour market.
- The International Labour Organization (ILO) forecasts that unemployment will rise by about 2.5 million this year.
- The ILO is a UN agency whose mandate is to advance social justice and promote decent work by setting international labour standards.
1 trillion trees project
Why in news?
- Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced that the United States will join the 1 Trillion Trees initiative which was launched at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020.

NSE is now world’s largest derivatives exchange by volume
Why in news?
- National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) has emerged as the world’s largest derivatives exchange in 2019 by number of contracts traded, surpassing the CME Group, according to Futures Industry Association (FIA), a derivatives trade body.
- NSE is also ranked third in the world in the cash equities segment by number of trades as per the statistics published by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).
Key facts
- Over the last five years, the cash equities segment on NSE has grown by more than 90%, from a daily average turnover of about ₹17,572 crores in CY 2015 to about Rs. 34,264 crores in CY 2019.
- During the same period, equity derivatives daily average turnover has increased by 70% from about ₹52,371 crores in CY15 to ₹88,772 crores in CY19.
- NSE has seen more than 1.2 crore new investor registrations in the cash equities segment in the last five years out which close to 87 lakh registrations were in the last three years.
- The stock exchange said that a third of the new investors have come from tier 3 and tier 4 cities and towns.
