Introduction: Definition of Sociology and Political Science

Main BodyTrace The Relationship Starting from Divergence to Complementing Each Other

Conclusion: Use of Both to Solve The Problem of Society

Introduction:

Sociology and political science are two distinct academic disciplines that study different aspects of human society and behaviour. Sociology is the systematic and scientific study of human behaviour, social groups, and society. Sociology is a discipline that examines how humans interact with each other and how human behaviour, values, norms is shaped by structural and institutional forces and look at how we help create those social structures and institutions. Political science is that branch of knowledge that deals with the state and systems of government; the scientific analysis of political activity and behaviour.

Main body:

Divergence:

  • In the initial face of order to provide the status of discipline to Sociology, the early sociologists separated sociology from political science on the ground that the Political Science was concentrated with the state and power whereas Sociology was a broader discipline associated with the study of entire society. Sociology is devoted to the study of all aspects of society, whereas conventional political science restricted itself mainly to the study of power as embodied in formal organization.
  • The subject matter of sociology is open ended and the political science has more codified subject matter. Sociology stresses the interrelationships between sets of institutions including government, whereas political science tends to turn attention towards the processes within the government.

Complementing Nature

  • Despite their initial divergence, both fields share overlapping interests. For instance, both sociology and political science study social institutions such as family, education, and religion. Sociologists examine how these institutions shape individuals’ behavior and interactions, while political scientists explore how they intersect with political processes and governance.
  • Political science provides for law which affect welfare of masses. Sociology provides data and basis for these law and policies. Social considerations like caste, kinship, and demography play an important role in political decision making.
  • Both the discipline converges at the level of both subject matter and methodology. The subject matter off both the discipline is same , state , nation , voting pattern , social movement etc. Methods have been used interchangeablye. Parsons theory of Social System has been used by David Easton in analysing the working of state.
  • Over time, sociology and political science have come to complement each other. Sociological perspectives, such as conflict theory and symbolic interactionism, have been instrumental in understanding political phenomena.
    • For example, conflict theory helps analyze power struggles within society, while symbolic interactionism sheds light on the role of symbols and communication in politics.
    • Max Weber’s ideas on the rationalization of society and the concept of authority have contributed to political science’s understanding of governance and sociology’s analysis of bureaucracy.
  • Sociology has contributed significantly to the study of social movements and their impact on political change. Thinkers like Karl Marx, who is central to both sociology and political science, explored how economic structures influence political power dynamics and revolutions.
  • Sociologists, exemplified by Max Weber, have made significant contributions to the field known as political sociology. Over time, political sociology has increasingly centered its efforts on the empirical examination of political behaviour. In recent Indian elections, there has been a noticeable emphasis on in-depth analyses of voting patterns.
  • By then, another development occurred in America Known as the behavioural approach to political phenomena. This was initiated by the University of Chicago. In the thirties, attempts were made by various scholars to create a scientific discipline of behavioural politic although now a day this attempt stands discredited.
  • It is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish political science from political sociology. There are a number of Marxist studies having Marxist-socialist ideas as their hypothesis. Also as modern state is increasingly getting involved in providing welfare amenities, sociological slant to political activity and political thinking is gaining more and more acceptance.

Conclusion:

Sociology and Political science have a dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship. While they started as distinct disciplines, they have evolved to complement each other in understanding complex social and political phenomena. In the words of Anthony Giddens “ to teach the theory of the state to man who has not learned the first principle of Sociology is like teaching law of thermodynamics to man who has not learned Newton’s first law.”
