VALUE EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT OF CITIZENS AGAINST CHALLENGES.

Values are generalized preferences to lead a particular kind of life or to attain a particular end state, like compassion, integrity, rule of law etc. Since values are learned through socialization, therefore education must help inculcate appropriate values like harmony, peace, compassion, humility, respect for human dignity & human rights and respect for the environment.

  • Aristotle has rightly said that “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all”. Gandhiji also stressed that literary education is of no value, if it is not able to build up a sound character.
  • Contemporary Indian society has been facing the problem of declining values due to multi-dimensional forces such as globalization, materialism, consumerism, commercialization of education, environmental degradation, violence, religious fundamentalism and terrorism.
  • These have led to insecurities, individualistic life styles, ever increasing desires, misuse of science and technology, sense of alienation and other negative consequences.
  • Value education will prepare the young generation to develop their own creative ways to respond to modernization as well as retain their original character of being part of the Indian culture. It will teach them to practice the commonly held values of harmony and peace with self and others.
  • Right education towards globalization can serve as a vehicle for promotion of inter-connectivity and interdependence. While we promote national integration, we must also cultivate values required to live in harmony with global society as global citizens.
  • Values and attitudes can guide individual actions based on the principles of fairness, goodness, constructive attitude and wisdom to discern between the potential and pitfalls of scientific and technological advancements.
  • Value education helps us learn the value of being considerate towards the weaker sections, thereby fighting the challenges posed by social prejudices. It is because it builds personality with traits, like courage, fortitude, compassion, integrity etc.

Hence, the very nature of value education empowers the citizens with certain attitudes and skills as well as give them the critical ability to use them in the contemporary everyday world, full of myriad challenges.
