The Theorists Behind the Definition of the Situation

Sociologists William I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki are widely recognized for establishing the foundation of the theory known as the definition of the situation. They conducted a groundbreaking empirical study on Polish immigrants in Chicago, which was published in five volumes between 1918 and 1920. In their work titled “The Polish Peasant in Europe and America,” they emphasized the significance of considering social meanings and interpreting experiences not solely based on personal needs, but also in alignment with the traditions, customs, beliefs, and aspirations of their social environment. “Social meanings” refer to shared beliefs, cultural practices, and norms that become inherent to the members of a society.

While Thomas and Znaniecki explored the concept, it was sociologists Robert E. Park and Ernest Burgess who first mentioned the phrase “definition of the situation” in their 1921 book “Introduction to the Science of Sociology.” They attributed the phrase to a Carnegie study published in 1919. In their book, Park and Burgess stated that common participation in shared activities necessitates a common understanding of the situation.

They further posited that every action, as well as moral life, depends on the definition of the situation. It is the defining principle of symbolic interaction theory: action follows meaning. Without a shared understanding among participants, individuals would be uncertain about how to conduct themselves. However, once the situation is defined, it sets boundaries for certain actions while restricting others.

Illustrations

An easily comprehensible illustration of how situations are defined and why this process holds significance is that of a written contract. A legally binding document, such as an employment contract or a contract for the sale of goods, outlines the roles and responsibilities of the involved parties, and establishes the actions and interactions that will occur based on the situation as defined by the contract.

However, sociologists are primarily intrigued by the less tangible definition of a situation, which they use to describe an essential aspect of all the interactions in our daily lives, also known as micro-sociology. Consider the example of riding a bus. Before even boarding the bus, we are already engaged with a definition of the situation wherein buses exist to serve our transportation needs in society. With this shared understanding, we have certain expectations, such as finding buses at specific times and locations, and being able to access them for a certain fare.

As we step onto the bus, both we and the other passengers, along with the driver, operate within a shared definition of the situation that guides our actions – paying or swiping a pass, conversing with the driver, taking a seat, or holding onto a handrail.

When someone acts in a way that contradicts the defined situation, it can lead to confusion, discomfort, and even chaos.
