World No Tobacco Day -31st May 2018

  • This year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day is the impact of tobacco on cardiovascular health.
  • Report shows that India is the second largest consumer of tobacco products with 28.6 percent of the population addicted to it in any form.
  • But the prevalence of smoking tobacco in India dropped down according to a World Health Organization report
  • Besides cancer, the use of tobacco in any form is also a leading cause of Type-2 diabetes.

Hoolock Gibbon

  • Hoolock gibbons are the only apes found in India.
  • They are found in all seven states of northeast India, Eastern Bangladesh and South-West China.
  • They are found only at south of Brahmaputra and east of the Dibang rivers
  • There are two species of Hoolock Gibbon’s viz. Western Hoolock Gibbon and Eastern Hoolock Gibbon and both species are found in India.
  • They are extremely rare primates listed under Schedule 1 of Wildlife Protection Act (1972) and as endangered as per Red list of IUCN.
  • It’s the State Animal of Arunachal Pradesh
  • Poaching is one big threat to these apes as their body parts are used as traditional medicines
  • Hoolocks are the second largest of the gibbons, after the siamang.

  • Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted for protection of plants and animal species
  • It extends to the whole of India, except the State of Jammu and Kashmir, which has its own wildlife act.
  • It has six schedules, which give varying degrees of protection
  • Schedule 1 provides absolute protection – offences under these are prescribed the highest penalties.

 

Palm Civets

  • It is IUCN Red Listed as Least Concern as it is tolerant of a broad range of habitats
  • The Asian palm civet is native to South and Southeast Asia.
  • Tropical forests are their preferred habitat but they can also be found in logged forests.
  • Palm civet cats generously disperse seeds maintaining the tropical-ecosystem due to their movements through the forest.
  • India is home to large number of civet species and these nocturnal mammals are hunted for skin and bush meat.
  • Total of 9 species of civet found in India
  • Most famous due to its particular affection for coffee berries, which result their feces are more important for trade.

Alipore Zoological Garden

  • Is India’s oldest formally stated zoological park.
  • It is also home to one of the few captive breeding projects involving the Manipur brow-antlered deer

PETA

  • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is an American animal rights organization based in Norfolk, Virginia.
  • Its slogan is “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”
  • It is the largest animal rights group in the world.
  • One of the major successes of PETA was influencing Municipal Council of Kullu (H.P) to issue an order refusing to grant permission for animal sacrifice on the last day of Kullu Dussehra Festival.

PMI-Purchasing Managers Index

  • Is an indicator of business activity — both in the manufacturing and services sectors
  • The PMI is usually released at the start of the month, much before most of the official data on industrial output, manufacturing and GDP growth becomes available. It is, therefore, considered a good leading indicator of economic activity.
  • The Variables used to construct India’s PMI for manufacturing sector are: Output, New Orders, Employment, Input Costs, Output Prices, Backlogs of Work, Export Orders, Quantity of Purchases, Suppliers‟ Delivery Times, Stocks of Purchases and Stocks of Finished Goods.
  • The PMI is more dynamic compared to a standard industrial production index(IIP)

 

World Food Programme

  •  World Food Programme is the UN agency focused on hunger alleviation and food security. Globally, it responds to emergencies making sure food reaches where it is needed, especially in times of civil strife and natural disasters.
  • It is the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security
  • In India, WFP has moved from providing direct food aid to providing technical assistance and capacity building services to the Government of India.

NCLAT

  •  National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is a quasi-judicial body in India that adjudicates issues relating to Indian companies.
  • was constituted on 1 June 2016 by the government of India & is based on the recommendation of the Justice Eradi committee on law relating to insolvency and winding up of companies
  • The NCLT has eleven benches.
  • The decisions of NCLAT may be appealed to the Supreme Court of India.

Core Sectors

  • In India, there are eight core sectors comprising of coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement and electricity.
  • The electricity has the maximum weight of 10.32% followed by Steel (6.68%), Petroleum Refinery (5.94%), Crude Oil production (5.22 %), Coal production (4.38 %), Cement (2.41%), Natural Gas production (1.71 %) and Fertilizer production (1.25%).
  • These eight Core Industries comprise nearly 40% of weight of items included in Index of Industrial Production (IIP), which measures factory output.
