Role of rituals in gender discrimination and empowerment

The caste system in contemporary India is a multifaceted and evolving framework that still influences the country’s social, political, and economic landscape. Although it has its roots in ancient traditions, the system has undergone considerable changes over time due to historical events, colonial influence, and reforms introduced after independence. Gaining insight into the present state of the caste system is crucial to understanding its ongoing impact on Indian society today.

In India, the caste system and gender roles are intricately connected, with a woman’s social status often influenced by her caste identity. Higher castes may afford women more privileges, while those from lower castes face greater obstacles. This relationship forms a complex network of societal expectations and restrictions for women.

Women from lower castes frequently endure dual discrimination based on both caste and gender, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities. This perpetuates a cycle of poverty and marginalization. Addressing women’s rights must take these intertwined issues into account for effective change.

Caste  based discrimination among women

Discrimination against women varies significantly across different castes. For instance:

  • Higher castes often impose strict rules regarding marriage and acceptable behavior for women.
  • Women from lower castes face economic challenges, which can further limit their ability to claim their rights.
  • Inter-caste marriages frequently lead to social exclusion, particularly impacting women.

Understanding the intersection of caste and gender is essential to addressing disparities. In India, caste and gender are so intertwined that a woman’s true status and position cannot be fully understood without considering her caste or tribal identity.

Case study

Worshipping kali and role of caste

  • Kali’s defining characteristic is her ungovernable nature, existing beyond conventional norms of behavior. This gives her an intense and flexible persona, making her adaptable in modern times, especially for fringe groups that challenge the dominant order. Her extreme nature encompasses both violent, bloodthirsty aspects and protective, maternal qualities. It has been suggested that goddesses appear gentle and auspicious when they conform to the will of their husbands, adhering to traditional roles, but become fierce and dangerous when they do not. Kali, however, resides outside the moral order and thus remains unbound by its constraints.
  • Kali’s iconography varies widely across the Indian subcontinent, reflecting her diverse representations. In Bengal, she is depicted as both maternal and fiery, while in Kerala, she takes the form of the auspicious Bhadrakali. In North India, she is revered as the awe-inspiring Chamunda, showing her extraordinary influence over the devotional imagination of her followers.
  • Kali’s iconography shifts based on geography, symbolizing her immanence. Her principal seats are in places like Purnagiri, Uddiyan, Jalandhar, and Kamrup. However, Kali also plays a strong political role. In South India, she is primarily represented in performance rather than visual art, with a distinct caste association, often connected to disadvantaged communities. This is seen in traditional forms like Mudiyettu, Theyyam, Padayani, and Kathakali. In Kerala, her worship centers around protecting women and restoring justice, transcending caste distinctions.
  • Kali also provides an outlet for emotions typically suppressed in daily life, as illustrated in performances like Mudiyettu, where men reenact her violent battle with Daruka. These performances challenge societal norms. In Theyyam, performers from lower castes, often from once “untouchable” communities, perform in the homes or temples of high-caste Namboodiris and Nairs. During the performance, they are considered divine, possessing oracular powers. Many Theyyams focus on women’s rights and highlight feudal oppression.
  • In Kerala, Kali is a symbol of political, economic, and spiritual power, and those who control her worship hold significant resources and prestige. The Theyyam performers, mostly from the lowest social strata, have strong ties with the Communist Party of India (CPI), which has championed their causes and elevated “untouchable” art forms by including them in state events and parades.
  • Historically, Kali also served as an intermediary deity for low-caste devotees in Kerala, especially in the early 20th century when they were barred from entering upper-caste temples. M. Kabir notes that high-caste-controlled shrines and temples strictly denied access to lower castes, making Kali a crucial figure for marginalized communities seeking spiritual connection.

In conclusion, the caste system in modern India remains a complex and evolving issue. Despite significant efforts to reduce caste-based discrimination, the system continues to shape various aspects of life, including politics, education, and employment. Its historical roots have left deep-seated divisions that are not easily overcome. However, societal progress is evident, with younger generations increasingly questioning traditional caste norms and a growing recognition of the need for equality and justice. Going forward, it is crucial for India to continue addressing these challenges, promoting inclusivity, and building a society where everyone, regardless of caste, has equal opportunities.
