Why In News?
Recently, India got elected as Member of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the principal global body focussed on gender equality and women empowerment.
- It is a significant victory as India won by beating China in a hotly-contested election.
About the Election:
- It is highly notable and telling that China lost the election to the UN’s principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment when the silver jubilee anniversary of the landmark Beijing conference on women is being commemorated and of which China takes a lot of ownership on.
- The election result is being seen as sending a strong signal about China’s own record of women’s equality and empowerment.
Significance for India:
- India’s Permanent Mission to the UN has been working tirelessly for the hard-fought elections by reaching out and sensitizing with all the member states.
- India’s win at the election is highly significant as it comes on the eve of India gearing up to sit at the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for the two-year term which is beginning on January 21, 2021.
What is UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)?
- It is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women
- It is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
- In 1996, ECOSOC expanded the Commission’s mandate and decided that it should take a leading role in monitoring and reviewing progress and problems in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and in mainstreaming a gender perspective in UN activities.
About the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC):
- It is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as the implementation of internationally agreed development goals.
- The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.
- It has 54 members, elected by the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms.
- It coordinates the work of the 14 UN specialized agencies, ten functional commissions and five regional commissions, receives reports from nine UN funds and programmes and issues policy recommendations to the UN system and to member states.
