A father’s role qualities have a significant impact on a child’s future. When a child witnesses their father losing his temper, they perceive it as acceptable behavior. This places a grea responsibility on fathers. However, why do we emphasize fathers? What about mothers? The role of mothers in a child’s life has long been recognized, but humans possess a unique characteristic. In the animal kingdom, only mothers care for their young, while fathers have limited involvement beyond procreation. However, humans differ in this aspect as fathers also take on responsibilities.
Thiruvalluvar states that a family can experience happiness only when love and uprightness prevail within. Mothers are usually more gentle with children, but children also require firm discipline. This is where the father’s role comes in. If the mother is strict, the father can provide a more lenient approach, complementing the mother’s role.
Children have a natural inclination to learn, but they often learn more by observing and emulating their parents than by simply listening to them. An anecdote illustrates this point: One day, a father was cleaning his garden when he was called away, leaving the work unfinished. His son, who had been observing his father, took the axe left behind and mistakenly cut down a fruit-bearing tree that the father had carefully nurtured. The mother was alarmed, fearing that the child would face severe punishment from the father. Upon his return, the father was upset upon seeing the felled tree. He inquired about the responsible party, and the son truthfully admitted his mistake. Instead of punishing him, the father hugged the boy and explained that in the future, he should consult his father before cutting any trees. The mother questioned why the father had not punished the boy, to which the man responded that he didn’t punish him because the child had told the truth. Punishment would have conveyed the wrong message, suggesting that honesty was not valued. Thus, a tactful father can help their child develop into a responsible and honest individual.
