{"id":9695,"date":"2020-09-11T13:30:31","date_gmt":"2020-09-11T08:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=9695"},"modified":"2020-09-11T13:30:31","modified_gmt":"2020-09-11T08:00:31","slug":"national-crime-report-bureau-data-on-suicide-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/national-crime-report-bureau-data-on-suicide-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"National Crime Report Bureau data on suicide &#038; Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><strong style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 1.125rem;\">Relevance: G.S paper I: Society and social issues &amp; Sociology: Emile Durkheim: Suicide<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Why In News?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recently,<b>\u00a0The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)\u00a0<\/b>released\u00a0 data on suicides and\u00a0the number of accidental deaths across the nation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the data, more than\u00a0<b>1.39 lakh people<\/b>\u00a0committed suicide in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Highlights of NCRB data:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Data on Suicide-\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10,281 farmers,\u00a0<strong>cultivators and farm labourers committed suicide in 2019<\/strong>, only 68 less than the number of farmers who committed suicide in 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Farmers comprise 7.4% of all people<\/strong>\u00a0who died due to suicide in India.<\/li>\n<li>Between 2018 and 2019, the number of\u00a0<strong>people dying in suicides is 3.4%.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>highest proportion of suicide victims (23.3 per cent)<\/strong>\u00a0were educated up to matriculation while only 3.7 per cents were graduates and above,<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-74053976,imgsize-176767\/egsberge.jpg\" alt=\"NCRB: Mumbai, Kolkata see highest women, child trafficking cases: NCRB  study - The Economic Times\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">State-wise performance-<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2c7ipcroan06u.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/top3.jpg\" alt=\"10.1% who killed themselves in 2019 were unemployed, Maharashtra tops  suicide chart \u2014 NCRB data\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All states in southern India beginning from Maharashtra have suicide rates higher than the national average.<\/li>\n<li><b>Maharashtra,\u00a0<\/b>Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka accounting for almost 50% of all suicides.<\/li>\n<li>The all-India rate of suicides is 10.4, the rate of suicides in Kerala is 24.3, Telangana 20.6, Tamil Nadu 17.8 and Karnataka 17.1.<\/li>\n<li>Maharashtra\u2019s is 15.4, Goa 16.8 and Andhra Pradesh 12.4.<\/li>\n<li>At 0.5,\u00a0<b>Bihar has the lowest suicide rate<\/b>\u00a0in the country among states. UP recorded a suicide rate of 2.4 and Jharkhand 4.4.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jatinverma.org\/uploads\/2020_09\/unnamed_(2)1.png\" alt=\"The steady decline in farm sector suicides from 2016 to 2019, NCRB\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Major causes of Suicide:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/g3SPmATX2MgnFQ9XEjeEhORdmeew9i9hd1JPTDNul1yjs8-ykew6VZlJGMC-Xfk2r_phHl3fOcXdnrdwBHRP4fuibX87ur3Ukp4REpA\" alt=\"Causes of suicide in India | Times of Bennett\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Family problems and poorer background<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>One in every three who died of suicide in 2019 took the step due to\u00a0<b>family<\/b>\u00a0<b>Problems\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>poorer backgrounds\u00a0<\/b>accounting for 32.4%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Illness\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>Being ill, and substance abuse were the other major known causes (together accounting for 23%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>\u00a0Bankruptcy or indebtedness<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Bankruptcy or indebtedness, unemployment and poverty led to at least 11,500 suicides, about 8.2% of all such fatalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>\u00a0Poorer backgrounds<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Suicides among daily wage earners were higher about 32,500.
