They include the\u00a0<strong>turbojet, turboprop, ramjet, and pulse-jet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This system is<strong>\u00a0lighter, efficient and cost-effective<\/strong>\u00a0than other systems in use.<\/li>\n<li>Worldwide efforts are on to develop the technology for<strong>\u00a0air breathing engines for satellite launch vehicles.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Presently, satellites are launched into orbit by multi-staged\u00a0<strong>satellite launch vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0that can be used only once (expendable). These launch vehicles carry oxidiser along with the fuel for combustion to produce thrust.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>propulsion system which can utilise the atmospheric oxygen<\/strong>\u00a0during their flight will considerably reduce the total propellant required to place a satellite in orbit.<\/li>\n<li>If those vehicles are made\u00a0<strong>reusable,<\/strong>\u00a0the cost of launching satellites will further come down significantly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Types of Air Breathing engines<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ramjet:<\/strong>\u00a0A ramjet is a form of air-breathing jet engine that uses the vehicle\u2019s forward motion to compress incoming air for combustion without a rotating compressor.<\/li>\n<li>Ramjets work most efficiently at\u00a0<strong>supersonic speeds<\/strong>\u00a0but they are\u00a0<strong>not efficient at hypersonic speeds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scramjet:<\/strong>\u00a0A scramjet engine is an improvement over the ramjet engine as it efficiently operates at\u00a0<strong>hypersonic speeds<\/strong>\u00a0and allows\u00a0<strong>supersonic combustion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual Mode Ramjet (DMRJ) :<\/strong>\u00a0A dual mode ramjet (DMRJ) is a type of jet engine where a<strong>\u00a0ramjet transforms into a scramjet over Mach 4-8 range,<\/strong>\u00a0which means it can efficiently operate both in\u00a0<strong>subsonic and supersonic combustion modes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conducted at:<\/strong>\u00a0The test was conducted from\u00a0<strong>Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Launch Complex<\/strong>\u00a0at APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Odisha.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implications:<\/strong>\u00a0India became the fourth country to have demonstrated this technology after the\u00a0<strong>USA, Russia and China.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>China successfully tested its first\u00a0<strong>waverider hypersonic flight vehicle<\/strong>\u00a0in 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iastoppers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/DRDO-successfully-flight-tests-Hypersonic-Technology-Demonstrator-Vehicle.jpg\" alt=\"DRDO successfully flight tests Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle |  IASToppers\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The indigenous development of the technology will boost<strong>\u00a0the development of the systems built with hypersonic vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0at its core.<\/p>\n<p>It can be developed as a carrier vehicle for\u00a0<strong>long range cruise missiles<\/strong>\u00a0in the defence sector. This includes both\u00a0<strong>offensive and defensive hypersonic cruise missile systems,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to its high speed, most RADARs will be\u00a0<strong>unable to detect<\/strong>\u00a0it.
