{"id":9645,"date":"2020-08-31T14:05:36","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T08:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=9645"},"modified":"2023-04-07T12:30:13","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T07:00:13","slug":"covid-19-great-andamanese-tribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/covid-19-great-andamanese-tribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19 &#038; Great Andamanese Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Covid-19 &amp; Great Andamanese Tribe<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: G.S paper I: Society and Social Issues &amp; G.S paper II: Governance: Health: Issues relating to development and management of Social Sector\/Services relating to Health.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.livemint.com\/img\/2020\/03\/31\/600x338\/andaman_1585682014150_1585682014464.jpg\" alt=\"Coronavirus outbreak: Andaman's indigenous tribes face extinction threat\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Why in News<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The report of\u00a0<strong>Covid-19<\/strong>\u00a0cases among the members of the\u00a0<strong>Great Andamanese<\/strong>\u00a0tribe is a matter of concern as the total population of the tribe is already low.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>About Great Andamanese Tribe:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Great Andamanese is one of five\u00a0<b>PVTGs<\/b>\u00a0that reside in\u00a0<b>Andamans archipelago<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>They speak\u00a0<b>Jeru dialect\u00a0<\/b>among themselves and their number stands at 51 as per the last study carried out by Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti in 2012.<\/li>\n<li><b>Tuberculosis<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>alcoholism<\/b>\u00a0are widespread which makes them particularly vulnerable to Covid-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-77566701,imgsize-103708\/Tribepopln.jpg\" alt=\"The coronavirus has reached sensitive tribal belts, can local administration check its spread? - The Economic Times\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Tribes Found in Andamans:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1908, the term \u201cAndamanese\u201d referred to\u00a0<b>thirteen distinct tribal groups<\/b>, each distinguished by a different<b>\u00a0dialect\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>geographical location.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Andamans accommodate main five vulnerable tribes:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<b>The Jarwa, The Sentinelese, The Great Andamanese, Ongee and Shompen.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hostile tribes-<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The North Sentinelese tribe has been secluded for thousands of years and does not interact with the outside world.<\/li>\n<li>The North Sentinelese is said to be hostile to the outsiders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>What is Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group ( PVTG)?<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Tribal communities are often identified by some specific signs such as primitive traits, distinctive culture, geographical isolation, shyness to contact with the community at large.<\/li>\n<li>Some tribal groups have some specific features such as dependency on hunting, gathering for food, having a pre-agriculture level of technology, zero or negative growth of population and extremely low level of literacy.
