From 903 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2007, it dropped to 877 in 2016.<\/li>\n<li><strong>States having 840 or below Sex Ratio at Birth:<\/strong>\u00a0Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan (806), Bihar (837), Uttarakhand (825) and Tamil Nadu (840).<\/li>\n<li>Although infanticide has come down sex-selective abortions at scan centers is continuing to be the preferred method of abortions by parents obsessed with son preferences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unfinished task:\u00a0<\/strong>The Centre\u2019s \u2018Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao\u2019 campaign aimed at saving girl children has a huge unfinished task in front of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image.slidesharecdn.com\/presentationfinal-180322134010\/95\/sex-selective-abortion-in-india-6-638.jpg?cb=1521726187\" alt=\"Sex Selective Abortion in India\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Initiatives_are_taken_to_prevent_sex-selective_abortions\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Initiatives are taken to prevent sex-selective abortions:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act<\/strong>\u00a0was enacted and amended to arm the state to wage a war against this pernicious practice.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Objectives\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; The main purpose of enacting the act is<strong>\u00a0to ban the use of sex selection techniques<\/strong>\u00a0before or after conception and prevent the misuse of prenatal diagnostic techniques for sex-selective abortion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Salient features &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Offences under this act include conducting or helping in the conduct of prenatal diagnostic techniques in the unregistered units. Sex selection on a man or woman, conducting PNDT test for any purpose other than the one mentioned in the act. Sale, distribution, supply, renting, etc. of an ultrasound machine or any other equipment capable of detecting sex of the fetus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cradle Baby Scheme:\u00a0<\/strong>It is Tamilnadu Government\u2019s Scheme that provides for cradles at government hospitals and Primary Health Centres to receive unwanted newborns, and put them up for legal adoptions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Launched in 2015,\u00a0<strong>the scheme is aimed at promoting gender equality\u00a0<\/strong>and the significance of educating girls.<\/li>\n<li>The Scheme is targeted at<strong>\u00a0improving the Child Sex Ratio<\/strong>\u00a0through multi-sectoral interventions including prevention of gender-biased sex selection and promoting girl\u2019s education and her holistic empowerment.<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>tri-ministerial effort\u00a0<\/strong>of Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health &amp; Family Welfare and Human Resource Development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Way_ahead\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Way ahead<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ramp up awareness building exercises:<\/strong>\u00a0It is time again for the government to ramp up awareness building exercises.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use technology to monitor:<\/strong>\u00a0Every single pregnant woman right down to taluk levels until at least one year after birth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change in attitude:\u00a0<\/strong>While punitive aspects might offer a measure of deterrence, true change can only be brought about by a change in attitude.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The need of the hour for the government is to eliminate the distortion of son preference from people\u2019s minds as in the early year&#8217;s girl child has stronger immunity than a male child in turn survival rate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>For more such notes, Articles, News &amp;
