{"id":9554,"date":"2020-08-17T17:58:35","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T12:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=9554"},"modified":"2020-08-17T17:58:35","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T12:28:35","slug":"mauritius-oil-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/mauritius-oil-spill\/","title":{"rendered":"Mauritius oil spill"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<div class=\"entry-meta\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims\/Mains: G.S paper III Environment<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.5683270.1597244105!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_780\/mauritius-oil-spill.jpg\" alt=\"Mauritius seeks compensation as oil spill cleanup continues | CBC News\" \/><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Why In News?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recently, A Japanese ship named\u00a0<b>M V Wakashio<\/b>\u00a0struck a coral reef resulting in an oil spill of over 1,000 tonnes into the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/410\/cpsprodpb\/16936\/production\/_113907429_compoilspill.jpg\" alt=\"Why the Mauritius oil spill is so serious - BBC News\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>More on the news:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The accident had taken place near two environmentally protected marine ecosystems and the Blue Bay Marine Park Reserve, which is a wetland of international importance.<\/li>\n<li>A number of popular tourist beaches and mangrove plantations are located nearby the spill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/sites\/reliefweb.int\/files\/styles\/report-large\/public\/resources-pdf-previews\/1531184-Mauritius_Oilspill_map_20200813.png?itok=xdMwFEJl\" alt=\"Mauritius: Oil spill extent, As of 12 Aug 2020 - Mauritius | ReliefWeb\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Concerns associated with oil spills:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Oil spills\u00a0<strong>affect marine life<\/strong>\u00a0by exposing them to harsh elements and destroying their sources of food and habitat.<\/li>\n<li>Both birds and mammals can die from\u00a0<strong>hypothermia as a result of oil spills<\/strong>, for instance, oil destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0It also\u00a0<strong>decreases the water repellency of birds\u2019 feathers<\/strong>, without which they lose their ability to repel cold water.<\/li>\n<li>Conservationists are also anxious about o<strong>il washing into mangrove forests<\/strong>, where roots serve as nurseries for fish.<\/li>\n<li>Concerns are also growing for the thousands of local people whose\u00a0<strong>livelihoods will be impacted<\/strong>\u00a0by the spill.<\/li>\n<li>The damage could\u00a0<strong>impact Mauritius and its tourism-dependent economy\u00a0<\/strong>for decades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2020\/8\/13\/74f047197cc746769292494470913580_6.jpg\" alt=\"Mauritius oil spill: An alarm bell for environmental safety | Environment |  Al Jazeera\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Methods of Cleaning the oil spill:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image.slidesharecdn.com\/oilspillcleanup-130825074805-phpapp02\/95\/oil-spill-cleanup-6-638.jpg?cb=1377416924\" alt=\"Oil spill cleanup\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are a few ways to clean up oil spills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Including skimming<\/b>\u2013It involves removing oil from the sea surface before it is able to reach the sensitive areas along the coastline.<\/li>\n<li><b>\u00a0In situ burning\u00a0<\/b>\u2013\u00a0It means burning a particular patch of oil after it has concentrated in one area.<\/li>\n<li><b>Release of chemical dispersants<\/b>\u2013Releasing chemical dispersants helps break down oil into smaller droplets, making it easier for microbes to consume, and further break it down into less harmful compounds.<\/li>\n<li><b>Natural actions<\/b>\u00a0\u2013Natural actions in aquatic environments such as weathering, evaporation, emulsification, biodegradation and oxidation can also help reduce the severity of an oil spill and accelerate the recovery of an affected area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Other instances of oil spills:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Some of the\u00a0<strong>world\u2019s largest oil spills include the Persian Gulf War oil spill of 1991<\/strong>\u00a0when more than 380 million gallons of oil was poured into the northern Persian Gulf by Iraq\u2019s forces.<\/li>\n<li>The 2<strong>010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>\u00a0is also considered to be among the largest known accidental oil spills in history.
