that\u00a0<strong>Israel and the United Arab Emirates<\/strong>\u00a0(UAE) have<strong>\u00a0agreed to establish full diplomatic ties<\/strong>\u00a0as part of a deal to\u00a0<strong>halt the annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians<\/strong>\u00a0for their future state.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both the UAE and Israel are the\u00a0<strong>USA\u2019s close allies in West Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-detail\">\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-77566550,imgsize-97934\/deal.jpg\" alt=\"UAE-Israel peace deal: Opportunity for India to acquire a greater role in this strategic backyard - The Economic Times\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Key Highlights<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The UAE has become the<strong>\u00a0first Gulf Arab state<\/strong>\u00a0to do so and only the\u00a0<strong>third Arab nation to have active diplomatic ties with Israel.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt<\/strong>\u00a0made a peace deal with Israel in\u00a0<strong>1979,<\/strong>\u00a0followed by\u00a0<strong>Jordan<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>1994.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under the deal,\u00a0<strong>Israel would suspend its plans to annex large parts of the occupied\u00a0West Bank.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The West Bank is\u00a0<strong>sandwiched between Israel and Jordan.<\/strong>\u00a0One of its major cities is\u00a0<strong>Ramallah,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>de facto administrative capital of Palestine.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Israel took control of it in the\u00a0<strong>Six-day Arab-Israeli war, 1967<\/strong>\u00a0and has over the years established settlements there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>joint statement from the USA, the UAE and Israel<\/strong>\u00a0has been issued which says that\u00a0<strong>delegations would meet in the coming weeks<\/strong>\u00a0to sign deals on direct flights, security, telecommunications, energy, tourism and health care.<\/li>\n<li>Both nations will also partner on fighting the\u00a0Covid-19\u00a0<strong>pandemic<\/strong>\u00a0together.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>remains unclear<\/strong>\u00a0what prompted Israel and the UAE to make the announcement now.\n<ul>\n<li>In June 2020, the UAE\u2019s ambassador to the USA\u00a0<strong>warned that Israel\u2019s plan to annex the Jordan Valley and other parts of the occupied West Bank<\/strong>\u00a0would\u00a0<strong>upend Israel\u2019s efforts to improve ties<\/strong>\u00a0with Arab nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" #ff0000;\"><strong>Background:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Formed in 1971,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>UAE is a USA-allied federation of seven sheikhdoms<\/strong>\u00a0on the Arabian Peninsula which\u00a0<strong>did not recognise Israel<\/strong>\u00a0over its occupation of land home to the Palestinians.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>UAE relied on white-collar<\/strong>\u00a0(people who perform professional, desk, managerial or administrative work)\u00a0<strong>Palestinians<\/strong>\u00a0in creating its nation and<strong>\u00a0maintained its stance that Israel should allow the creation of a Palestinian state<\/strong>\u00a0on land it seized in the\u00a0<strong>1967 war.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In recent years,<strong>\u00a0ties between Gulf Arab nations and Israel have quietly grown,<\/strong>\u00a0in part over their<strong>\u00a0shared enmity of Iran<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>UAE also shares Israel\u2019s distrust of Islamist groups<\/strong>\u00a0like the\u00a0<strong>Muslim Brotherhood<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>militant group Hamas<\/strong>\u00a0that holds the Gaza Strip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>What will be the Impact on the UAE?<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>The deal<strong>\u00a0smoothens the UAE\u2019s international campaign<\/strong>\u00a0to be seen as a beacon of tolerance in the Middle East despite being governed by autocratic rulers.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>puts the UAE out first in a regional recognition announcement\u00a0<strong>justifies<\/strong>\u00a0the year-long claims of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his\u00a0<strong>government enjoys closer ties to Arab nations<\/strong>\u00a0than publicly acknowledged.<\/li>\n<li>The deal gives Netanyahu a\u00a0<strong>domestic boost<\/strong>\u00a0at a time when Israel\u2019s coalition government is facing infighting and the possibility of early elections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>What will be the Impact on the USA?<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>The recognition<strong>\u00a0grants a diplomatic win<\/strong>\u00a0to the USA President Donald Trump ahead of the November election.\n<ul>\n<li>Neither his efforts to bring the war in Afghanistan to an end nor efforts to bring peace between Israel and the Palestinians have been successful yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>For Palestine:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>For Palestinians, who long have relied on Arab backing in their struggle for independence, the announcement\u00a0<strong>marked both a win and setback<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0<strong>Israel-Palestine relations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>While the deal\u00a0<strong>halts Israeli annexation plans,<\/strong>\u00a0the Palestinians have repeatedly\u00a0<strong>urged Arab governments not to normalize relations with Israel until a peace agreement<\/strong>\u00a0establishing an independent Palestinian state is reached.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Way Forward<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The deal marks a historic day and a significant step forward for peace in the Middle
