{"id":9538,"date":"2020-08-15T16:47:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-15T11:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=9538"},"modified":"2023-04-07T13:19:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T07:49:15","slug":"organic-farming-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/organic-farming-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Organic Farming in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Organic Farming in India<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims\/Mains: G.S paper II: Governance &amp; G.S paper III: Agriculture<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Context:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a world battered by the COVID pandemic, the growth story of organic farming is unfolding with increasing demand not only in India but also globally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insightsonindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/organic_farming.jpg\" alt=\"Organic farming in India: - INSIGHTSIAS\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Status of Organic farming in India:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>India ranks first:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0in number of organic farmers and\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>ninth\u00a0in terms of area under organic farming.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>First fully organic state:\u00a0<\/strong>Sikkim became the first State in the world to become fully organic and other States including Tripura and Uttarakhand have set similar targets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advantage to India:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>North East India<\/strong>\u00a0has traditionally been organic and the consumption of chemicals is far less than the rest of the country.<\/li>\n<li>Similarly\u00a0<strong>the tribal and island territories<\/strong>\u00a0are being nurtured to continue their organic story.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opportunity in Covid crisis<\/strong>: This is an opportune moment to be captured for a win-win situation for Indian farmers, consumers and the environment, as the<strong>\u00a0demand for healthy and safe food<\/strong>\u00a0is showing an upward trend and hence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jatinverma.org\/uploads\/2020_08\/unnamed_(3)5.png\" alt=\"Status of Organic farming in India\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Government initiatives:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With the aim of assisting farmers to adopt organic farming and improve remunerations due to premium prices, two dedicated programs have been launched in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>These are &#8211; Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCD) and Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY).<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Agri-export Policy 2018:\u00a0<\/strong>With the simultaneous thrust given by the policy, India can emerge as a major player in global organic markets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The major organic exports from India<\/strong>: Flax seeds, sesame, soybean, tea, medicinal plants, rice and pulses, which were instrumental in driving an increase of nearly 50% in organic exports in 2018-19.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Certification:\u00a0<\/strong>It is an important element of organic produce to instill customer confidence. Both PKVY and MOVCD are promoting certification under\u00a0<strong>Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) and National Program for Organic Production (NPOP)<\/strong>\u00a0respectively targeting domestic and exports markets.\n<ul>\n<li>The Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017 are based on the standards of NPOP and PGS.<\/li>\n<li>The consumer should look for the logos of\u00a0<strong>FSSAI, Jaivik Bharat \/ PGS Organic India<\/strong>\u00a0on the produce to establish the organic authenticity of the produce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PGS Green\u00a0<\/strong>is given to chemical free produce under transition to \u2018organic\u2019 which takes 3 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The organic e-commerce platform:<\/strong>\u00a0Like www.jaivikkheti.in is being strengthened for directly linking farmers with retail as well as bulk buyers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>Some best practices:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>The Green Caravan of Kohima:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Created market linkages from all villages of Nagaland to urban areas for vegetables, handicrafts and handlooms.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00;\">Manipur Organic Agency (MoMA):<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>Mobilised all the 15 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) of MOVCD to collect produce and transport to two organic wholesale centers in Imphal for onward delivery to consumers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-490830e1f18df1d64915600685aed6c0.webp\" alt=\"How to double my income from agriculture - Quora\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Way ahead:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reviving the past:<\/strong>\u00a0Natural farming is not a new concept in India, with farmers having tilled their land without the use of chemicals &#8211; largely relying on organic residues, cow dung, composts, etc since time immemorial.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integration of the elements:\u00a0<\/strong>Such as<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>soil, water, microbes and \u2018waste\u2019 products, forestry and agriculture is the correct recipe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sustainable use of natural resources<\/strong>: Which are coming under severe stress due to ever increasing requirement of food and feedstock for agri based industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hence with greater awareness and capacity building of the producers, Indian organic farmers will soon be reinforcing their rightful place in global agri trade and will help India in achieving\u00a0<strong>SDG 2<\/strong>\u00a0targeting &#8211;
