Historically, villages surrounding Devikot have maintained and protected this land.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0grove\u00a0around the Degrai Mata temple was allocated for community use by Jaisalmer\u2019s king in the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, villagers received approximately 5,817 hectares of land registered in the name of the temple.<\/p>\n<p>The villagers submitted a memorandum to Jaisalmer\u2019s district collector June 2020 to register the remaining 9,358 hectares of land in the name of Degrai Mata Temple Trust.<\/p>\n<p>The Rajasthan government now, however \u2014 in an attempt to adopt cleaner sources of energy \u2014 is planning a solar park in the area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biodivvy.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/11\/indiamap_grove.jpg?w=748\" alt=\"Lessons from the Sacred Groves of India \u2013 Biodiversity and ...\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The allocation of village land for the development of solar and wind parks has begun\u00a0in Jaisalmer and neighbouring districts Barmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur as well. Some of these village pasture lands were misidentified as wastelands by the state government.<\/p>\n<p>Locals have maintained and\u00a0protected these lands\u00a0for centuries. They depend on these common property resources \u2014 including\u00a0<em>orans<\/em>\u00a0(sacred village forests) and\u00a0<em>gochars<\/em>\u00a0(village grazing land) \u2014 for dry fodder for their animals.<\/p>\n<p>Around half the income of small and marginal farmers in Rajasthan\u2019s arid areas comes from dairy and animal husbandry, according to the state government\u2019s draft\u00a0State Livestock and Dairy Development Policy, 2019.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/287341323\/figure\/fig4\/AS:328302490341414@1455284821966\/Strategies-for-conservation-of-sacred-grove.png\" alt=\"Strategies for conservation of sacred grove. | Download Scientific ...\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With soaring temperatures, communities have to cope with stressed natural resources. Herders, thus, find it challenging to arrange fodder for their livestock.<\/p>\n<p>The deplorable condition of these lands\u00a0occurred due to encroachment by some locals, disinterest of Panchayati Raj institutions and reallocation of the land by the state.<\/p>\n<p>This mismanagement poses a direct threat to fodder security for the livestock that is dependent on them.
