{"id":9024,"date":"2020-07-17T18:37:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T13:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=9024"},"modified":"2020-07-17T18:37:28","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T13:07:28","slug":"state-of-food-security-and-nutrition-in-the-world-2020-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/state-of-food-security-and-nutrition-in-the-world-2020-report\/","title":{"rendered":"State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2020 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims\/Mains: G.S paper II: Social Justice<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Context:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 The UN has warned in its recently released State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2020 report that achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of zero hunger might not be possible by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The report estimates 690 million people suffering from hunger globally in 2019, 10 million more than the previous year.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Key highlights of the report:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 The Covid-19 pandemic, and the global recession caused by it, will without doubt make matters worse, the report warns, with 130 million more suffering from chronic hunger in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In 2019, Asia had the highest number of hungry people (381 million), followed by Africa (250 million), and Latin America and the Caribbean (48 million).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 However, by 2030, Africa is estimated by the UN to account for around more than half of the world\u2019s hungry people by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The lowest-cost healthy diet is estimated to cost, on an average, more than $1.90\u2014which is more than the international poverty threshold\u2014and around three billion people across the globe are unable to afford this.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Rising food deprivation will exacerbate the existing problem of nutrition security.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The largest impact, both for the present as well as the future, will be of hunger amongst children\u2014191 million children under the age of five are currently undernourished.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 While India saw under-5 undernutrition decline by around 60 million over the last one and a half decade, from 21.7% in 2004-06 to 14% in 2017-19, and stunting has also come down, experts fear the pandemic could erode some of this progress.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Suggestions:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 The UN has pitched for clubbing direct cash transfers with in-kind transfers to ensure food security and diet diversity, though, in India\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It talks of the inefficiencies of the PDS and calls for reducing subsidies and redirecting these to direct cash transfer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Malnutrition, as estimated by FAO earlier, may cost nations 4-5% of their GDPs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Given how ensuring food security gets more urgent in the post-Covid-19 world.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Conclusion:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 India needs to shift comprehensively to cash support, so that the vulnerable don\u2019t fall through gaps.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Covid-19 pandemic, and the global recession caused by it, will without doubt make matters worse, the report warns, with 130 million more suffering from chronic hunger in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>For more such notes, Articles, News &amp;
