\u2022 The world\u2019s costliest fungus \u2014 Ophiocordyceps sinensis \u2014 also known as Himalayan Viagra, which sells in international markets for upwards of Rs 20 lakh per kg, has entered the International Union for Conservation of Nature\u2019s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.<\/p>\n

\"Himalayan<\/p>\n

\u2022 The list has placed the fungus, known for its aphrodisiac and rejuvenation properties, in the \u2018vulnerable\u2019 category.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Citing the reason for placing the fungus in the vulnerable category, IUCN said \u201cits spread has declined by at least 30% over the past 15 years as a result of overharvesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022 The fungus is also known as keeda jadi in Uttarakhand because of its caterpillar-like appearance.<\/p>\n

\u2022 It is endemic to the Himalayan and Tibetan plateau and is found in China, Bhutan, Nepal and India. In India, it is primarily found in Uttarakhand in the higher reaches of districts like Pithoragarh and Chamoli.<\/p>\n

Uses:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2022 As the name suggests, the Himalyan Viagra is mainly used as a treatment for impotency in many countries. It is believed to address premature ejaculation and sexual incapacity through gradually empowering internal energy of our body in a natural way. But these claims are highly disputed.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Studies reveal that caterpillar fungus has antibiotic properties. The herb is used to treat lung and respiratory infection<\/p>\n

\u2022 Cordyceps Sinensis also has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties to alleviate common pains and aches such as sciatica and backache
\n\u2022 Yarsagumba also provides vitality and increases physical stamina of the body<\/p>\n

\u2022 It is used by the Chinese to cure chronic Hepatitis-B and liver ailments<\/p>\n

\u2022 Cordyceptin has been found effective against tuberculosis as well as in the treatment of leprosy<\/p>\n

\u2022 Cordyceps Sinensis has also been found to be useful to address certain symptoms and conditions associated with leukemia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
