{"id":8949,"date":"2020-07-13T13:25:39","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T07:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=8949"},"modified":"2020-07-13T13:25:39","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T07:55:39","slug":"hagia-sophia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/hagia-sophia\/","title":{"rendered":"Hagia Sophia"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"hero-section\" data-type=\"type-1\">\n<header class=\"entry-header\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims: International<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.assettype.com\/swarajya%2F2020-07%2F06f09a05-fe48-4c94-a389-c4f637ed9093%2Feight_col_hagia.jpg?w=640&amp;q=75&amp;auto=format%2Ccompress\" alt=\"The Hagia Sophia Court Judgment \u2014 What Lies Beneath?\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>\u2022 Turkey\u2019s highest court allowed for the conversion of the nearly 1,500 year-old Hagia Sophia from a museum into a mosque.<\/p>\n<p><b>About:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The centuries-old structure, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, was originally a cathedral in the Byzantine empire before it was turned into a mosque in 1453, when Constantinople fell to Sultan Mehmet II\u2019s Ottoman forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In the 1930s, however, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, shut down the mosque and turned it into a museum in an attempt to make the country more secular.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Turkey\u2019s Council of State had declared in its ruling that the conversion of the Hagia Sophia from a mosque into the museum by the country\u2019s founder was illegal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The decision was in line with the Turkish president\u2019s calls to turn the hugely symbolic world heritage site into a mosque despite widespread international criticism, including from UNESCO, the United States and Orthodox Christian leaders.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/istanbulclues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Hagia-Sophia-Architecture.jpg\" alt=\"Hagia Sophia Architecture and Dome Features - Istanbul Clues\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>What does this mean for secularism in Turkey?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Researchers believe that Erdogan has systematically eroded the secular ideals of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on which the modern Turkish republic was founded.
