{"id":8546,"date":"2020-06-11T18:25:34","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T12:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=8546"},"modified":"2020-06-11T18:25:34","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T12:55:34","slug":"india-china-relations-ongoing-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/india-china-relations-ongoing-tensions\/","title":{"rendered":"India China relations, &#038; ongoing tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims\/Mains: G.S paper II: International<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/crcXptrnIPej-3AnV13SwQmKNB2l4zMJ0TaIGtuNyk0UdrZNBI0Q5gkNsUC0VzT1YOi1iBwbmdP8f1TDF3_bknc6I-lZp8Gz5WNsh3VzT3dZhtSeBGExA9o\" alt=\"India-China Relations \u2013 Civilsdaily\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Context:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 Chinese and Indian forces have begun to disengage in select areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 But this does not detract from the reality that in the past few weeks Beijing and Islamabad are making coordinated efforts to challenge India\u2019s presence in the Kashmir-Ladakh region.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 There is stepped-up activity on Pakistan\u2019s part to infiltrate terrorists into the Valley.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 China has undertaken provocative measures on the Ladakh front to assert control over disputed areas around the Line of Actual Control (LAC).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Overlapping interests of both China and Pakistan:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 In Pakistan\u2019s case the intensification in its terrorist activities is related in part to the dilution of Article 370.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dilution of Article 370 helps India de-link Ladakh from the Kashmir problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 For China, the division of Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir allows India a freer hand in contesting China\u2019s claims in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Increasing road-building activity on India\u2019s part close to the LAC augments this perception.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In addition to Ladakh borders China\u2019s most restive provinces of Xinjiang and Tibet.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ladakh is contiguous to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Gilgit and Baltistan, where the Chinese have invested hugely under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar\u2019s remark last year that India expects to have \u201cphysical jurisdiction over (POK) one day\u201d has alarmed Beijing which sees any such Indian move as threatening the CPEC project.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 These factors demonstrate the overlapping interests that Beijing and Islamabad have regarding India in this region.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Differences in objectives regarding India:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 These differences are related to their divergent perceptions of their disputes and their different force equations with India.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">China:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 For China, Ladakh is primarily a territorial dispute with strategic ramifications.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 China also believes it is superior to the Indian militarily and, therefore, can afford to push India around within limits as it has been attempting to do in the recent confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 China is a satiated power in Ladakh having occupied Aksai Chin and wants to keep up the pressure on New Delhi to prevent the latter from trying to change the situation on the ground.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Pakistan:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 For Pakistan, its territorial claim on Kashmir is based on an immutable ideological conviction that it is the unfinished business of partition and as a Muslim-majority state is destined to become a part of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Islamabad also realises that it is the weaker power in conventional terms and therefore has to use unconventional means, primarily terrorist infiltration, to achieve its objective of changing the status quo in Kashmir.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Changing the status quo:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 China\u2019s primary concern with regard to Kashmir is to prevent any Indian move from threatening the CPEC project.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It does not challenge the status quo in Kashmir.
