{"id":8430,"date":"2020-06-05T14:36:44","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T09:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=8430"},"modified":"2020-06-05T14:36:44","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T09:06:44","slug":"world-environment-day-2020-biodiversity-its-time-for-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/world-environment-day-2020-biodiversity-its-time-for-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"World Environment day 2020: biodiversity \u2014 it\u2019s time for nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims\/Mains: G.S paper III: Environment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Context:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 Since 1974, World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on June 5 is known as the most renowned day for environmental action.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It has been engaging over 190 governments, thousands of businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on pressing environmental issues.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Highlights about the theme:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 For 2020 the theme is biodiversity \u2014 it\u2019s time for nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 This is an issue that is both urgent and existential.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The last decade has made the consequences of our broken relationship with nature more evident than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Rapidly changing climate, bushfires, melting glaciers, increasing intensity and frequency of floods and drought; and now, locust attacks and the global Covid-19 pandemic, act as a reminder that human health is linked to the planet\u2019s health.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image.slidesharecdn.com\/imporatnceofenvironmentandscope-180405092541\/95\/definition-scope-and-importance-of-environment-science-7-638.jpg?cb=1522920426\" alt=\"Definition, scope and Importance of environment science\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the climate that makes our planet inhabitable is all made available to us by the services that nature and biodiversity perform.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The eight million species on our planet \u2014 from plants to bacteria and animals to fungi \u2014 and the ecosystems that house them, and the genetic diversity among them, is what describes biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Biodiversity may be seen as an intricate web of life, in which every part is interdependent. When one component is changed or removed, the entire system is affected and this produces negative consequences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/irYEBoS_YQJu_h6jNbRtgTUo0b43it5aEWQs9sTVvJvhxP5kabcpgv57s2AE05xO6jzfFY6UzK1r5OW0zTuwAzWHH0ovCYVKl69jFXsOvdEhLnTLGk9jQKB2TUKyde2ydsE57BDpjhENEkM8cZGh7y_CD-INICoWyG4h3zK3B60JhaiWVBqUsBoNQIE27S7zvYDiM36exWw0krP6dlKv\" alt=\"Environmental Health Theme \u2014 Dirisa Portal\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">State of the planet:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 Each year, marine plants produce more than half of our atmosphere\u2019s oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A mature tree cleans the air by absorbing 22 kg of carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen in return.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Each year, pollinators like bees and bats help three-fourth the world\u2019s flowering plants and approximately 35 per cent of the world\u2019s food crops reproduce.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Today, humans extract more from the Earth than ever before (60 billion tonnes of renewable and non-renewable resources); world population has doubled over 50 years and the per-person consumption of materials up by 15 per cent since 1980.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Over the last three decades, global extraction of biomass, fossil fuel, minerals and metals rose by 80 per cent, and fishing now covers over half of the world\u2019s ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 This World Environment Day calls on each of us to collectively recognise the interdependence of all life on Earth. It calls upon our collective conscience to be guided by the shared misery caused by this global pandemic and recognise the fragile linkages that human health and existence has with nature.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India and the environment:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 Maharashtra has had to brace itself for the first cyclone in 126 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 With the destruction caused by Cyclone Amphan in West Bengal and Orissa, and while the 300 million marginalised people have been suffering unimaginable chaos and suffering caused by Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The starkness of the economic and social insecurity we are faced with has never been more apparent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-c7e8114e8f0bf75fffee8cafadd91648\" alt=\"Why is there a need to conserve our environment? - Quora\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Concern for India:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 India is a biodiversity hotspot, a big reason to celebrate our flora and fauna and wide vegetation types. And while our population of 1.3 billion people fights for space on 7 per cent of the world\u2019s land, we must continue to find ways to co-exist with nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Governments must ensure we protect all remaining wild spaces, implement efficient systems of waste management, and adopt a circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ensuring a strong environmental impact assessment, implementation of all environmental guidelines and norms across sectors, building of green infrastructure and support to green enterprises is imperative.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The private sector needs to account for the environment in supply chains and financing, and adopt green measures. As individuals, we need to rethink what we buy and use and manage our consumption of all resources responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 As youth, we must become committed gatekeepers of a green future. The quality of our lives and the survival of our population is dependent on these actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 As we work to build back our economy, let us not forget the cost of losing our fragile ecosystems that provide us good health, clean air, water, and food?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Conclusion:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 Economic growth can no longer be achieved at the cost of ecological imbalance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Well-balanced ecosystems rich in biodiversity are fundamental to human existence, health, peace, and progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It\u2019s time to wake up.
