This is near the bottom of the pile among the countries categorised as \u201cFree\u201d, with only Tunisia receiving a lower score.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India witnessed the worst score decline among the world\u2019s 25 largest democracies.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s overall score declined from 75 in 2019 to 71 in 2020, with civil liberties taking the biggest hit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Freedom House is a US-based watchdog, which has been tracking global political and civil liberties for almost half a century.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Observations made by the report on India:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Freedom_in_the_world_report_2020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7007\" src=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Freedom_in_the_world_report_2020.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Freedom_in_the_world_report_2020.jpg 980w, https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Freedom_in_the_world_report_2020-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Freedom_in_the_world_report_2020-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Freedom_in_the_world_report_2020-768x498.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India was bogged down by multiple reasons including its Kashmir policy after abrogating Article 370, the National Register of Citizens for Assam, passage of contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and frequent internet shutdowns across the country.<\/li>\n<li>It notes, the government has taken its Hindu nationalist agenda to a new level with a succession of policies that abrogate the rights of different segments of its Muslim population, threatening the democratic future of a country long seen as a potential bulwark of freedom in Asia and the world.<\/li>\n<li>A fierce crackdown on protesters opposing the changes, indicated a deterioration of basic freedoms in the world\u2019s largest democracy, says report.<\/li>\n<li>The report, which treats Kashmir as a separate territory, downgraded the Union territory\u2019s status from \u201cpartly free\u201d to \u201cnot free\u201d due to the Indian government\u2019s abrupt revocation of Article 370 in August.<\/li>\n<li>In terms of internet freedom, India fares worse, scoring just 55 and is categorised as \u201cpartly free\u201d. As per the report, internet freedom has declined for the fourth year in a row in India.<\/li>\n<li>It also highlights the spread of fake news and manipulated content, creating political divide.
