{"id":6899,"date":"2020-03-06T13:33:07","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T08:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=6899"},"modified":"2020-03-06T13:36:15","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T08:06:15","slug":"kunjali-marakkar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/kunjali-marakkar\/","title":{"rendered":"Kunjali Marakkar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: Prelims: Modern History<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A descendant of Kunjali Marakkar has filed a writ petition in the Kerala High Court seeking to stop the release of the upcoming movie \u2018Arabikadalinte Simham\u2019 based on the life of the 16th century naval chieftain of the Zamorin of Calicut, for allegedly \u201cdistorting history\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham\u2019 is an upcoming Indian Malayalam-language epic historical drama film co-written and directed by Priyadarshan.<\/li>\n<li>Set in the 16th century, the film is based on the battle exploits of Kunjali Marakkar IV\u2014the naval chieftain of the Zamorin of Calicut.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kunjali Marakkar or Kunhali Marakkar was the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>title given to the Muslim naval chief of the Zamorin<\/strong> <\/span>of Calicut (Samoothiri of Kozhikode), by King of Calicut, in present-day state of Kerala, India during the 16th century. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>There were four major Kunjalis<\/strong> <\/span>who played a part in the Zamorin&#8217;s naval wars with the Portuguese from 1507 to 1600. The Marakkars are credited with organizing the first naval defense of the Indian coast.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The title of Marakkar was given by the Zamorin<\/strong><\/span>. It may have been derived from the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> Malayalam<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>language word marakkalam meaning \u2018boat,\u2019 and kar,<\/strong><\/span> a termination, showing possession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The four key Kunhali Marakkars:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Muhammed Marakkar \/ Kutti Ali \u2013 Kunhali Marakkar I<\/li>\n<li>Kunhali Marakkar II<\/li>\n<li>Pate Marakkar \/ Pattu Kunhali \u2013 Kunhali Marakkar III<\/li>\n<li>Mohammed Ali \u2013 Kunhali Marakkar IV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to tradition, Marakkars were originally Muslim marine merchants of port Kochi who left for Ponnani in the Zamorin&#8217;s dominion when the Portuguese fleets came to Kingdom of Cochin.
