Supreme Court reiterated in a judgment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Background_Reservation_in_promotions_in_Public_Posts\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Background: Reservation in promotions in Public Posts<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">A Bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and Hemant Gupta observed that State governments are not bound to make reservations. Even the courts could not issue a mandamus directing States to provide reservations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The judgment was based in a batch of appeals pertaining to the reservations to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in promotions in the posts of Assistant Engineer (Civil) in Public Works Department of Uttarakhand.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_highlights\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Key highlights:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">There is no doubt that the State government is not bound to make reservations. There is no fundamental right which inheres in an individual to claim reservation in promotions.
