{"id":5958,"date":"2020-01-28T15:22:36","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T09:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=5958"},"modified":"2020-01-28T15:22:36","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T09:52:36","slug":"archaea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/archaea\/","title":{"rendered":"Archaea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Relevance: mains: G.S paper III: Science and Technology<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Archea.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5959\" src=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Archea.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Archea.png 302w, https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Archea-150x83.png 150w, https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Archea-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists at the National Centre for Microbial Resource \u2014 National Centre for Cell Science (NCMR-NCCS) in Pune have reported a new archaeon (a kind of microorganism), which they discovered in Sambhar Salt Lake in Rajasthan.<\/li>\n<li>The discovery was described in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Why it matters?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Archaea (singular archaeon)<\/span> are a primitive group of microorganisms that thrive in extreme habitats such as hot springs, cold deserts and hypersaline lakes.<\/li>\n<li>These slow-growing organisms are also present in the human gut, and have a potential relationship with human health.<\/li>\n<li>They are known for producing antimicrobial molecules, and for anti-oxidant activity with applications in eco-friendly waste-water treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Archaea are extremely difficult to culture due to challenges in providing natural conditions in a laboratory setting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Search and discovery:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sambhar Lake has been poorly studied for microbial ecology studies.<\/span> With a salt production of 0.2 million tonnes per annum, it is also a hypersaline ecosystem which provides an opportunity for microbial ecologists to understand organisms that thrive in such concentrations.<\/li>\n<li>Once the new organism was found, it took researchers one year to complete the study because archaea grow so slow.<\/li>\n<li>Based on a mandatory genome analysis, researchers found that the organism has potential gene clusters that helps maintain the metabolism of the archaea to survive in extreme harsh conditions.<\/li>\n<li>This particular organism also harbours specific pathways for DNA replication, recombination and repair.<\/li>\n<li>The new archaeon has been named Natrialba swarupiae, after Dr Renu Swarup, secretary, Department of Biotechnology, for her initiative in supporting microbial diversity studies in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Relevance: mains: G.S paper III: Science and Technology Why in news?
