The researchers described the infectious agent as a \u201ccoronavirus.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key highlights:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coronaviruses are a specific family of viruses, with some of them causing less-severe damage, such as the common cold, and others causing respiratory and intestinal diseases.<\/li>\n<li>A coronavirus has many \u201cregularly arranged\u201d protrusions on its surface, because of which the entire virus particle looks like an emperor\u2019s crown, hence the name \u201ccoronavirus\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Apart from human beings, coronaviruses can affect mammals including pigs, cattle, cats, dogs, martens, camels, hedgehogs and some birds.<\/li>\n<li>So far, there are four known disease-causing coronaviruses, among which the best known are the SARS corona virus and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus, both of which can cause severe respiratory diseases.<\/li>\n<li>In the newly identified coronavirus, a direct link with the disease has not been established yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/coronavirus_labeled-300x175.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5571\" src=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/coronavirus_labeled-300x175.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>World Health Organization on this<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.<\/p>\n<p>Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. \u00a0Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.<\/p>\n<p>Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.<\/p>\n<p>Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
