The ranking is based on exclusive data from the\u00a0International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world\u2019s largest and most accurate database of travel information, and enhanced by ongoing research by the Henley &amp; Partners Research Department.<\/p>\n<p>With expert commentary and historical data spanning 14 years, the Henley Passport Index is an invaluable resource for global citizens and the standard reference tool for governments in this field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The latest edition of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Henley Passport Index<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>has been released.<\/p>\n<p>The Index ranks India at 86, down five places from 81 in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the index:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0Henley Passport Index (HPI)\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>a global\u00a0ranking of countries<\/strong>\u00a0according to the travel freedom for their citizens.<\/li>\n<li>The index gathers data from the\u00a0<strong>International Air Transport Association (IATA)<\/strong>\u00a0that manages inter-airline cooperation globally.<\/li>\n<li>The Henley Passport Index is updated in real time according to countries\u2019 visa policy changes.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>started in 2006 as\u00a0Henley &amp; Partners Visa Restrictions Index (HVRI)<\/strong>and was modified and renamed in January 2018.<\/li>\n<li>The HPI consists of a\u00a0ranking of passports\u00a0according to how many other territories can be reached \u2018visa-free\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What does this mean for Indian passport holders?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>India has a score of 58. That is the number of destinations an Indian passport holder can travel to today, without pre-departure government approval. That is the same as a citizen of any country, on an average, could travel to 13 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>In 2006, a citizen, on an average, could travel to 58 destinations without needing a visa from the host nation; by 2018, this number had nearly doubled to 107.<\/li>\n<li>India ranks below other BRICS countries, with which are at a similar stage in their economic development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Significance of the index:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passport rankings point towards the strength of diplomatic relations between countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Relevance: prelims\/mains: G.S paper II:\u00a0Important International institutions, agencies and fora- their structure, mandate.
