{"id":376,"date":"2018-04-09T12:54:23","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T07:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=376"},"modified":"2018-04-09T12:54:23","modified_gmt":"2018-04-09T07:24:23","slug":"world-bank-to-fund-for-climate-resilient-agriculture-in-maharashtra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/world-bank-to-fund-for-climate-resilient-agriculture-in-maharashtra\/","title":{"rendered":"World Bank to fund for climate resilient agriculture in Maharashtra"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The Government of India, Government of <strong>Maharashtra<\/strong> and the <strong>World Bank<\/strong> signed a US$ 420 million <strong>Climate resilient farming project<\/strong> to help Small and Marginal farmers in the <strong>Marathwada<\/strong> and <strong>Vidarbha<\/strong> regions of Maharashtra.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Maharashtra Project for Climate Resilient Agriculture<\/strong> will be implemented in <strong>rural areas<\/strong> largely dependent upon <strong>rainfed agriculture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In recent years, climate variability has affected agriculture in Maharashtra, where farming is largely dominated by small and marginal farmers. <strong>Farmers have low crop productivity and a high dependence on rainfall<\/strong>. Severe <strong>drought<\/strong> in the past has affected the state\u2019s agriculture performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Significance <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The project will help in <strong>increasing climate resilient practices in agriculture<\/strong> and ensuring that <strong>farming continues to remain a financially viable activity<\/strong> for them.<\/li>\n<li>The project is expected to benefit over 7 million people spread over an area of 3.0 million hectare and cover 5,142 villages across 15 most climate vulnerable districts of the region.<\/li>\n<li>The US$ 420 million loan from the <strong>International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)<\/strong>, has a 6-year grace period, and a maturity of 24 years.<\/li>\n<li>The project will take up a series of <strong>activities at the farm and watershed level<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It will scale up <strong>climate-resilient technologies<\/strong> such as <strong>micro irrigation systems<\/strong>, <strong>expand surface water storage<\/strong>, and facilitate <strong>aquifer recharge<\/strong>, which is expected to directly contribute to a more <strong>efficient use of scarce water resources<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>At the <strong>watershed level<\/strong>, project activities include <strong>building drainage lines<\/strong> and preparing <strong>catchment area treatment plans<\/strong> that promote a more <strong>efficient use of surface water for agriculture<\/strong>, complemented with a more <strong>sustainable use of groundwater<\/strong>, which will ultimately<strong> improve the availability and quality of water<\/strong> at the farm level.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>strengthen emerging value chains<\/strong> for climate-resilient agricultural commodities, the project will <strong>improve the capacity of Farmer Producers Organisations (FPO)<\/strong> to operate as sustainable, market-oriented, agri-enterprises<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s per capita emission of<strong> Green House Gases (GHG)<\/strong> is also on the rise, though current per capita levels of 2.44 t CO2 equivalent in 2012, is still among the lowest in the world. In absolute terms, the <strong>agriculture sector is the second largest contributor with around 18 percent of the country\u2019s total GHG emissions<\/strong>.
