{"id":3750,"date":"2019-07-20T16:12:11","date_gmt":"2019-07-20T10:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=3750"},"modified":"2019-07-20T16:12:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-20T10:42:11","slug":"defence-mission-shakti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/defence-mission-shakti\/","title":{"rendered":"Defence: Mission Shakti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Relevance: mains: G.S paper III:\u00a0Achievements of Indians in science &amp; technology; indigenization of technology and developing new technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why in News? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indian defence scientists demonstrated ASAT or anti-satellite missile capability successfully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are anti-satellite weapons? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anti-satellite missiles can be deployed against enemy satellites, disrupting crucial intelligence during war.<\/li>\n<li>Such a weapon allows for attacks on enemy satellites &#8211; blinding them or disrupting communications &#8211; as well as providing a technology base for intercepting ballistic missiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is mission Shakti? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mission Shakti is an anti-satellite missile test conducted by India.<\/li>\n<li>This was a technological mission carried out by DRDO.<\/li>\n<li>The satellite used in the mission was one of India\u2019s existing satellites operating in lower orbit.<\/li>\n<li>With this test, India joins an exclusive group of space faring nations consisting of USA, Russia and China.<\/li>\n<li>DRDO\u2019s Ballistic Missile Defence interceptor was used, which is part of the ongoing ballistic missile defence programme.<\/li>\n<li>The test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure that there is no space debris.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is the international law on weapons in outer space? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The principal international Treaty on space is the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.<\/li>\n<li>India is a signatory to this treaty, and ratified it in 1982.<\/li>\n<li>The Outer Space Treaty prohibits only weapons of mass destruction in outer space, not ordinary weapons.<\/li>\n<li>India is not in violation of any international law or Treaty to which it is a Party or any national obligation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Relevance: mains: G.S paper III:\u00a0Achievements of Indians in science &amp; technology; indigenization of technology and developing new technology.
