However, sociology urges us to move beyond headline numbers and ask deeper questions:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">\u00a0<strong>What does poverty mean?<br \/>\nWho defines it? And<br \/>\ndoes the disappearance of extreme poverty imply the disappearance of deprivation?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Understanding_Poverty_Beyond_Income\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Understanding Poverty: Beyond Income<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The <strong>World Bank<\/strong> defines poverty as \u201cpronounced deprivation in well-being,\u201d while Indian institutions rely largely on <strong>consumption-based poverty lines<\/strong>. India\u2019s rural poverty reduction aligns with Polanyi\u2019s thesis: <strong>food security, employment guarantees, and cash transfers have cushioned rural households against market volatility<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">However, sociology warns against assuming permanence.
