Union of India<\/em> (2018) declared the <strong>right to die with dignity<\/strong> as a fundamental right. But sociologically, what does \u201cdignity\u201d mean in India?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Indian religious and philosophical traditions \u2014 from <strong>Sanatana Dharma<\/strong> to <strong>Buddhism<\/strong> and <strong>Sikhism<\/strong> \u2014 value <strong>detachment, renunciation<\/strong>, and the transcendence of suffering. Pain, therefore, has <strong>moral value<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In many Indian households, choosing to die (even passively) is seen as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Rejection of divine will<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Disrespect to caregivers<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Cowardice or sin<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">This produces a <strong>moral tension<\/strong>: While the law permits euthanasia, the <strong>social imagination condemns it<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indian_Family_and_the_%E2%80%9CGood_Death%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Indian Family and the \u201cGood Death\u201d<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Talcott Parsons and the Sick Role<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Parsons argued that illness is a form of <strong>social deviance<\/strong>, and society creates the <strong>\u201csick role\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 the expectation that the ill will seek treatment and desire recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In India, terminal illness is often <strong>denied<\/strong>, hidden, or spiritualised. Families hold on to hope, sometimes against all odds, leading to <strong>aggressive over-treatment<\/strong> in ICUs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The idea of a <strong>\u201cgood death\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 peaceful, at home, surrounded by family \u2014 clashes with the <strong>medical-industrial reality<\/strong> of death today, which is sterile, institutional, and prolonged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Euthanasia, in this context, threatens the <strong>moral economy of caregiving<\/strong>, particularly for women, who are culturally obligated to serve the sick until death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Euthanasia_and_the_Political_Economy_of_Health\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Euthanasia and the Political Economy of Health<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Who Gets to Die with Dignity?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Let\u2019s invoke <strong>Conflict Theory<\/strong> (Marxist lens): Who benefits from prolonged treatment? And who is denied access to pain relief?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The <strong>urban, upper-middle-class<\/strong> patient may access palliative care, legal advice, and ICU decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The <strong>poor and rural<\/strong> die without painkillers, oxygen, or the right to refuse unnecessary intervention.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Thus, in India, the <strong>right to die with dignity<\/strong> is classed, gendered, and regional:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Passive euthanasia may exist on paper, but <strong>only the privileged can afford a dignified death<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\"
