But from a <strong>sociological perspective<\/strong>, NAVYA represents more than a training program \u2014 it is a <strong>social experiment<\/strong> unfolding within entrenched structures of <strong>patriarchy, class inequality, education gaps, and cultural norms<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skill_vs_Structure_What_Are_We_Training_Girls_For\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Skill vs. Structure: What Are We Training Girls For?<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">While NAVYA aims to skill girls for emerging sectors, the real question is \u2014 <strong>are we skilling them for integration or assimilation<\/strong> into a system that is <strong>already structurally exclusive<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Structural Functionalist Lens (Parsons, Merton)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">NAVYA presumes that skill development will allow girls to perform <strong>\u201cinstrumental roles\u201d<\/strong> in the economy. Skilling becomes a form of <strong>reproductive labour repurposed for the market<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">As <strong>Silvia Federici<\/strong> would argue, this is not liberation \u2014 it is <strong>capitalist co-optation of gendered bodies<\/strong> under the guise of empowerment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Liberal Feminism vs. Radical Feminism<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Liberal feminism<\/strong> would welcome NAVYA for its focus on <strong>access, choice, and opportunity<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">But <strong>Radical feminism<\/strong> (e.g., <strong>Shulamith Firestone<\/strong>) would question whether <strong>economic participation alone<\/strong> dismantles patriarchal control over female bodies and aspirations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">NAVYA might get girls into tech labs \u2014 but can it get patriarchy out of their homes?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intersectionality_Caste_Class_and_Rurality\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Intersectionality: Caste, Class, and Rurality<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Kimberl\u00e9 Crenshaw\u2019s intersectionality theory is deeply relevant here.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Most girls targeted by NAVYA are from <strong>aspirational districts<\/strong> \u2014 code for <strong>backward, marginalised, or rural regions<\/strong>. Their barriers to economic entry are <strong>not just gender<\/strong>, but <strong>caste, class, and geographic exclusion<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">A Dalit girl in Bihar entering a drone-training program doesn\u2019t just need skills \u2014 she needs <strong>social capital, network access, legal protection, and a cultural shift in her family\u2019s perception of female work.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Sociologist <strong>Leela Dube<\/strong> has long highlighted how <strong>rural patriarchy and caste purity norms<\/strong> restrict girls\u2019 mobility and choices. NAVYA must thus be understood not just as training, but as <strong>potential caste-class transgression<\/strong>, which invites social backlash if not supported holistically.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Indian_Family_and_Girlhood_Sociology_of_Adolescence\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> The Indian Family and Girlhood: Sociology of Adolescence<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Girlhood in India is not an individual stage \u2014 it\u2019s a collective social position.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">NAVYA targets girls aged 16\u201318, an age deeply entangled with <strong>family honour, marriage negotiations, and gender policing<\/strong> in Indian society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">According to <strong>Patricia Jeffrey and Roger Jeffery<\/strong>, in rural India, adolescent girls are seen as <strong>family property<\/strong> \u2014 to be protected, controlled, and ultimately \u201csettled\u201d through marriage. In such a setting, offering skilling without tackling the <strong>patriarchal family institution<\/strong> limits outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">NAVYA\u2019s inclusion of POSH and POCSO awareness is crucial \u2014 but awareness alone cannot fight against <strong>normative structures<\/strong> that normalize gendered violence and control.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beyond_Skills_Towards_Sociological_Empowerment\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Beyond Skills: Towards Sociological Empowerment<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">NAVYA\u2019s modules on <strong>financial literacy, health, life skills<\/strong> indicate an attempt at <strong>holistic empowerment<\/strong>.
