Nearly <strong>65% of Indians are below the age of 35, and over 50% are below 25.<\/strong> For decades, economists have projected this <strong>demographic dividend<\/strong> as India\u2019s greatest strength. A large working-age population, if skilled and employed productively, could accelerate India\u2019s rise as a global economic powerhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">But there is a flip side. As the <strong>Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore<\/strong> once observed, \u201c<strong>Don\u2019t limit a child to your own learning, for she was born in another time.\u201d<\/strong> India\u2019s <strong>education system<\/strong> and <strong>labour market structures<\/strong> have failed to adapt to the new realities of the 21st century. Millions of graduates are entering the workforce each year, but many remain <strong>underemployed, unemployed, or unemployable<\/strong>. The mismatch between <strong>education and employability<\/strong>, compounded by the disruptive force of <strong>Artificial Intelligence (AI)<\/strong> and automation, has turned India\u2019s demographic dividend into what some call a <strong>ticking time bomb<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Demographic_Dividend\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>What is Demographic Dividend?<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In demographic studies, a <strong>demographic dividend<\/strong> refers to the economic growth potential that arises from shifts in a population\u2019s age structure\u2014specifically when the working-age population (<strong>15\u201364 years)<\/strong> grows larger relative to the dependent population (<strong>children and elderly<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">For India, this is supposed to be a <strong>\u201cwindow of opportunity<\/strong>\u201d until around 2055. Curricula are outdated, often teaching skills suited to jobs of the past rather than preparing students for the <strong>future of work<\/strong>. With <strong>AI, machine learning, robotics, and big data<\/strong> reshaping industries, many graduates find themselves ill-equipped for the job market.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Graduate Unemployment and Underemployment<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Every year, millions of graduates enter the job market. Yet surveys show that a large proportion is either unemployed or working in low-skill, low-wage jobs unrelated to their qualifications. This <strong>mismatch<\/strong> is visible in the fact that engineers drive cabs, MBAs work in clerical jobs, and graduates prepare endlessly for government exams due to lack of alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Automation and Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The <strong>AI revolution<\/strong> is transforming global labour markets. Studies suggest that up to 70% of jobs globally will be impacted and nearly 30% of current tasks may be automated. While new jobs in AI development and data-driven industries are emerging, the majority of India\u2019s youth lack the technical training to enter these fields. The <strong>curriculum update cycle<\/strong> in schools and colleges, often three years long, is too slow for such rapid technological change.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Jobless Growth<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">India has witnessed high GDP growth in recent decades, but this has not translated into proportionate <strong>employment growth<\/strong>. Economic growth has been led by capital-intensive sectors like IT, finance, and telecom, while labour-intensive manufacturing has lagged. This phenomenon of <strong>jobless growth<\/strong> threatens to push the demographic dividend into a demographic disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Rising Inequalities<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The inability to absorb youth into productive work has sharpened <strong>class inequalities<\/strong> and regional disparities. The <strong>urban middle class<\/strong> is able to adapt to new opportunities, while rural youth often remain trapped in low-paying, insecure jobs. Not all youth have equal access to quality education, digital skills, or social networks. Middle-class urban students may find opportunities, but rural or lower-caste youth face systemic barriers. Thus, the demographic dividend is unequally distributed.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Functionalist Perspective<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">From a <strong>functionalist perspective<\/strong>, education is supposed to act as an agent of socialization and skill development. But in India, it has failed to align with the needs of the economy. The dysfunction between <strong>education and employment<\/strong> creates social instability and discontent.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Feminist Perspective<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Women face an additional layer of challenge. While female enrolment in higher education has increased, <strong>labour force participation of women in India remains one of the lowest in the world<\/strong> (around 25%). The <strong>patriarchal family structure<\/strong>, coupled with lack of safety and workplace flexibility, prevents women from contributing fully to the economy\u2014wasting a significant portion of the demographic dividend.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Bauman\u2019s Liquid Modernity<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Sociologist <strong>Zygmunt Bauman\u2019s idea of liquid modernity<\/strong> also applies. In today\u2019s \u201cliquid\u201d job market, careers are no longer stable. Young Indians face constant insecurity, rapid technological changes, and the pressure to re-skill. This insecurity fuels migration, gig work, and precarious employment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Current_Relevance\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Current Relevance <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>National Education Policy (NEP 2020):<\/strong> Aims to make education holistic, skill-oriented, and aligned with the future of work.
