Yet, beneath this progress lies a hidden reality: the <strong>unseen battles that women fight every day at workplaces<\/strong>. These range from <strong>gender discrimination<\/strong>, <strong>sexual harassment<\/strong>, and the <strong>glass ceiling<\/strong>, to subtler forms like <strong>unpaid care burdens<\/strong>, <strong>occupational segregation<\/strong>, and <strong>gender wage gaps<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_%E2%80%9CSecond_Sex%E2%80%9D_to_Wage_Workers\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>From \u201cSecond Sex\u201d to Wage Workers<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">For centuries, women were treated as the <strong>\u201csecond sex\u201d<\/strong>, a concept famously articulated by <strong>Simone de Beauvoir<\/strong>. Patriarchal systems denied women education, inheritance rights, property ownership, and access to professional life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In India, traditional families assigned women the role of <strong>transmitting culture and values<\/strong>, limiting their agency to domestic domains. Women engaged in <strong>unpaid agricultural labour, caregiving, and domestic chores<\/strong>, but this was neither recognised in GDP nor valued socially. Their strength was exploited without compensation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Only a few educated women in elite families could enter professions like teaching or nursing. The presence of policies like the <strong>Equal Remuneration Act (1976)<\/strong> and <strong>Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act (2017)<\/strong> reflects this framework. Yet, gaps in implementation and persistent stereotypes hinder true equality.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Radical Feminism \u2013 Patriarchy at the Core<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Radical feminists highlight patriarchy as the root cause of women\u2019s subordination. <strong>Sexual harassment at workplace (POSH Act, 2013)<\/strong>, objectification in corporate culture, and subtle biases in promotions show how deep-seated patriarchy operates even within modern office spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Intersectionality (Kimberl\u00e9 Crenshaw) \u2013 Caste, Class, and Gender<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Women in India face <strong>layered disadvantages<\/strong>. This \u201cdouble shift\u201d<\/strong> creates stress and limits career advancement.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Sexual Harassment and Hostile Work Environments<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The <strong>POSH Act (2013)<\/strong> legally protects women, but implementation is patchy. Even in bureaucracy, judiciary, and politics, women are underrepresented. This leadership gap reflects systemic barriers to mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"7\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Informal Sector Exploitation<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Over <strong>90% of Indian women workers are in the informal sector<\/strong>\u2014as construction labourers, domestic workers, or street vendors\u2014without contracts, maternity benefits, or social security.
