In this context, <strong>ethanol<\/strong> has emerged as a key component in India\u2019s strategy for achieving <strong>energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting agricultural sustainability<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Ethanol_and_Why_It_Matters\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>What is Ethanol and Why It Matters<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Ethanol is a <strong>biofuel<\/strong> derived primarily from sugarcane, maize, rice, and other starch- or sugar-rich crops. It can be blended with petrol to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. As a <strong>renewable, domestically produced fuel<\/strong>, ethanol offers a cleaner alternative that burns more efficiently and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">India, which imports over 85% of its crude oil needs, spends billions of dollars on fuel imports. Ethanol blending provides a way to mitigate this burden while promoting <strong>self-reliance in energy<\/strong>, in line with the vision of <strong>Aatmanirbhar Bharat<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"National_Ethanol_Blending_Programme\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>National Ethanol Blending Programme<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">India\u2019s <strong>Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme<\/strong>, launched in 2003 and significantly revamped in the past decade, aims to promote the use of ethanol as a blend stock with petrol. Additionally, it insulates the country from <strong>volatile international crude prices<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Boost to Farmers<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The ethanol program has created a <strong>stable demand for agricultural produce<\/strong>, especially sugarcane and grains. In 2023-24, over <strong>400 crore litres of ethanol<\/strong> were procured, providing income stability to farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The diversification of feedstock to <strong>maize, rice, and damaged grains<\/strong> is also helping farmers in non-sugarcane states like Bihar, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Environmental_and_Climate_Gains\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Environmental and Climate Gains<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Burning ethanol produces <strong>lower carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter<\/strong> compared to petrol. Automobile majors like <strong>Toyota and Honda<\/strong> have initiated pilot FFV models in India. The government plans to make FFV adoption mandatory in phased manner by <strong>2027<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Ethanol Production Capacity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">India\u2019s installed ethanol production capacity in 2023 stood at <strong>13 billion litres<\/strong>, up from just 4 billion litres in 2018. The target is to raise it to <strong>17 billion litres by 2025<\/strong>, including <strong>grain-based<\/strong> and <strong>sugar-based<\/strong> ethanol.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong> Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">OMCs like Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL are investing in <strong>ethanol dispensing infrastructure<\/strong>.
