However, amidst the gleaming facades of <\/span>metro rails, surveillance systems, and Wi-Fi zones<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lay <\/span>sprawling slums and informal settlements that challenge the very idea of \u201csmartness<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d This paradox presents a rich sociological dilemma \u2014 how can we reconcile the promise of urban modernity with the <\/span>persistence of poverty, inequality, and spatial exclusion?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Urban_Dilemma_What_is_a_Smart_City\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>The Urban Dilemma: What is a Smart City?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Cities are envisioned as technology-driven, efficient urban spaces with <\/span><b>focus on mobility, e-governance, sustainable housing, and digitization. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in cities like <\/span><b>Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune, 40-60% of the population lives in slums,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without access to basic amenities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>Paradox: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one hand, these cities have <\/span><b>surveillance systems and metro connectivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Slums are not aberrations but results of economic and social polarization in cities.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b> Urban Sociology &amp; Collective Consumption: According to Manuel Castells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, urban inequality is a failure of state provision of public goods.
