According to the 2021 Census projections,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>2050, over 20% of India\u2019s population will be senior citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this rise is accompanied by a disturbing trend: rising neglect, abandonment, and abuse of the elderly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>From property disputes to emotional neglect, India\u2019s seniors are increasingly ageing alone, stripped of dignity, often facing intergenerational conflict and social isolation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><b>&#8220;presentation of self&#8221; changes, is leading to a decline in self-esteem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their symbolic status as caretakers and knowledge bearers is lost in modern, fast-paced society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b> Neglect and Abuse within Families: Elder abuse\u2014whether physical, emotional, or financial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014is a growing concern. <\/span><b>Property disputes and inheritance pressures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often lead to manipulation or neglect by children. Some seniors are coerced into <\/span><b>transferring property<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are later abandoned.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>From a Marxist lens,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this reflects <\/span><b>class conflict within the household<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where elders are seen as unproductive and become a burden on capitalist family structures. The family, once a site of <\/span><b>emotional security, transforms into a space of power struggles and exploitation.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b> Economic Insecurity and Dependency: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A majority of India\u2019s elderly, especially in rural areas<\/span><b>, lack stable income, pension, or health insurance. Yet India&#8217;s healthcare system is largely oriented toward the young and working population. Geriatric care is underdeveloped.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>From a structural-functionalist perspective, health institutions are failing in their role to maintain the well-being of all age groups.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The system lacks the specialized structures needed to meet the evolving needs of the elderly, thus causing system imbalance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b> Loss of Authority and Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, elders were revered in Indian society. With <\/span><b>modernization, technological advancement, and intergenerational value conflicts, their knowledge is often seen as outdated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This leads to <\/span><b>loss of respect and alienation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>Modernization theory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argues that as societies modernize the status of the elderly declines<\/span><b>. Youth-centric values, individualism, and scientific temper replace traditional wisdom and experience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marginalizing the elderly in public and private spaces.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b> Institutionalization and the Rise of Old Age Homes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increasing number of <\/span><b>old-age homes\u2014once taboo in Indian culture\u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shows a shift in societal values. While some seniors willingly opt for them, many are forced due to family neglect or urban loneliness.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>Durkheim\u2019s concept of anomie\u2014a state of normlessness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014applies here. The elderly experience value disorientation, where societal norms that once <\/span><b>assured care and dignity are weakening,<\/b> <b>leading to psychological distress and a loss of meaning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b> Gendered Experience of Ageing: Elderly women, especially widows, face a double burden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014both as ageing individuals and as women in a patriarchal society. After multiple legal battles, he now lives in an old-age home. It illustrates how property becomes a site of intergenerational conflict, and the failure of informal care systems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>What Can Be Done?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>Strengthen Community-Based Elder Care Models:<\/b> <b>NGOs and SHGs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be trained to provide <\/span><b>emotional and physical support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the local level.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><b>Revise Pension and Health Insurance Schemes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With inflation, current pensions are inadequate.
