\n<\/strong>Haresh’s father, Badri, was a resident of Dhumnagar in West Champaran, Bihar. Badri had four sons\u2014Haresh, Awadhesh, Suresh, and Dinesh. In search of better opportunities, Badri moved to Dashawa village in Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh. He spent his entire life working as a laborer but was unable to provide a better standard of living for his family.<\/span><\/p>\nFamily Livelihood<\/strong><\/span>
\nAll four brothers work as laborers to support themselves. Awadhesh and Suresh are employed in Panipat, while Dinesh works in Rohtak. Out of the four, three brothers live in straw houses, with only Dinesh owning a two-room concrete house. None of them own agricultural land, as their father, Badri, had leased 12 kattha of land from the government but was forced to sell it due to financial difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\nAlthough legally prohibited, the sale of leased land to wealthier farmers is a common practice in Kushinagar, where poverty-stricken leaseholders are often exploited. Haresh’s mother lives with his younger brother in these difficult conditions.<\/span><\/p>\nLiving Conditions of Haresh<\/strong><\/span>
\nHaresh lives in a small thatched hut located in the fields. His home is modest, containing only a plank for sleeping, a fan, a small gas stove, and some clothes. A hand pump and a mud stove are placed outside the house. At 40 years old, Haresh has worked as a daily wage laborer, but his earnings were never enough to meet the basic needs of his family.<\/span><\/p>\nDebt and Struggles<\/strong><\/span>
\nOver the years, Haresh has fallen deeper into debt, currently owing Rs 2 lakh to micro-finance companies. Even the Rs 1.10 lakh he received through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) was used to pay the interest on this loan.<\/span><\/p>\nHe previously worked at a brick kiln in Kubersthan, earning Rs 160 per day for carrying 1,000 bricks. However, after losing this job, he struggled to find consistent work. On average, Haresh manages to work only 10-15 days a month, earning Rs 300-400 per day.<\/span><\/p>\nAttempt at Farming
\n<\/strong>Two years ago, Haresh leased 10 kattha of land to try his hand at farming. He took out a loan to cover the initial costs, but without sufficient funds for fertilizers, seeds, and irrigation, farming soon became unsustainable. Eventually, he was forced to abandon this effort, adding to his financial burdens.<\/span><\/p>\nThis case study highlights the challenges faced by families like Haresh\u2019s, who despite their efforts remain trapped in poverty due to a combination of lack of resources, financial burdens, and limited opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\nThe microfinance sector has significantly contributed to promoting inclusive and balanced development. However, its benefits have been concentrated in specific regions, leaving other areas underserved.
