class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kamat conceptualized the relationship between education and social change in India in three stages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>First stage :<\/strong>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong>In the first stage, he talks about the early British period to the end of the 19th century<\/strong>. In this period, the <strong>colonial socioeconomic and political structure<\/strong> was established in India.<\/li>\n<li>However <strong>it also played a kind of liberating role in breaking down traditional norms and values,<\/strong> which were in consonance with the older feudal, socio-economic politic and were a hindrance to itself.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>also sowed the seeds of new norms and values<\/strong> -of a bourgeoisie society and modern nationalism. <strong>This liberating influence was internalized and worked in two directions: <\/strong>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li><strong>i<\/strong>) Towards <strong>a close scrutiny of the indigenous social systems<\/strong> and culture <strong>leading to powerful movements of social and religious reform and protests movements<\/strong> ,<strong>ike Satya Shodak Samaj <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>ii) Towards the <strong>process of self-discovery, self-assessment in the context of the new situation,<\/strong> leading to the creation of an alternative centre of <strong>social cohesion, the anti-imperialist movement<\/strong> for <strong>national liberation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> stage :<\/strong>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>In the period between the two wo<strong>rld wars, education assumed a mass character<\/strong>. <strong>Occupational and social mobility occurred among segments of population<\/strong> that were hitherto unnoticed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>So far education had spread mainly to the upper caste and urban upper strata in society. Now it began to percolate to sections lower in the social hierarchy<\/strong>, the <strong>middle castes and middle strata<\/strong>. This carried the <strong>process of nationalism and social awakening<\/strong> still further, to <strong>the working class in the towns and to the peasantry in the countryside.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The process considerably <strong>strengthened the movement for national liberation as well as the movement for social change<\/strong>. Meanwhile, the growth of the colonial system of education was developing serious contradictions within itself and also vis-a- vis the colonial socio-economic structure. <strong>This provided added edge to the principal contradiction between the British imperialism and the Indian people. <\/strong>This contradiction <strong>was reflected in large-scale unemployment <\/strong>among the educated on the one hand and the liberating influence in the <strong>strength and militancy of the powerful student and youth movement or the other. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third Stage:<\/strong>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>In the third stage, i.e<strong>. from post-Independence period up to the mid-sixties, <\/strong>the process of <strong>social and political awakening<\/strong> has taken further strides. Its two aspects, <strong>conformity and liberation<\/strong>, are also operating. At <strong>the same time, the contradiction within the education system i.e., in relation the development, socio-economic structure have also sharpened.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ananda Coomaraswamy \u2018s views on education <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ananda Coomaraswamy, a renowned Indian scholar and philosopher, held a unique view on the role of education in Indian culture. <strong>According to Coomaraswamy, education should not be confined to a mere system but should focus on drawing out and setting free the characteristic qualities of the taught.<\/strong> He believed that culture in the East has been only secondarily connected with books and learning, and it has been a part of life itself<strong>.Some key aspects of Coomaraswamy&#8217;s view on the role of education in Indian culture include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Emphasis on the teacher&#8217;s personality: <\/strong>Coomaraswamy stressed the importance of the teacher&#8217;s personality and the development of personal character and conduct.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integration of ethics and altruism: <\/strong>He believed that ethics should spring from altruism and not from religious or other commandments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preservation of Indian culture: <\/strong>Coomaraswamy lamented the loss of Indian ideals, such as speech, action, concentration, and stillness, which existed for centuries despite Islamic invasions.
