The period after <strong>independence witnessed the enactment of a number of laws<\/strong> that sought to apply the principle <strong>underlying the constitutional guarantees to the sphere of social life.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">With the acceptance of planning it became evident that <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">if development was to be accelerated, the economy could not afford to ignore the potential for contribution of half the population. Hence efforts were made to involve women in the development process.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Law and social change <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The <strong>reform in personal laws governing marriage and inheritance<\/strong>, the labour laws ensuring human conditions of <strong>work, maternity benefits and welfare of workers<\/strong> have been some of the measures aimed at <strong>removing the disabilities<\/strong> <strong>that contributed to the low status of women. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">The policies and programmes of planned <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">socio-economic development<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> attempted positive <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">action to improve and widen opportunities<\/strong> <strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">for women<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> to participate in the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">socio-economic processes of development in a more effective manner.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">The other factor, which sharpened the focus on women\u2019s participation in development<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">, was the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">change in development theory<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">. The realisation that the benefits of planned process of <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\">development do not trickle down automatically to poorer and weaker sections of society stimulated special efforts towards the weaker and exploited sections of society.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Specially targeted programmes were <strong>conceived and implemented along with other measures to raise the rate of growth<\/strong>. Women were identified as one such disadvantaged group to whom special attention needs to be paid<strong>.
