Srinivas \u00a0in his work Religion and Society<\/strong><\/span> among the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Coorgs of South India<\/strong>.<\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He described\u00a0 Sanskritization as \u201ca process by which \u2018low\u2019 caste or tribe or the other group takes over the custom, ritual , beliefs, ideology and style of life a high and, in particular, a \u2018twice born\u2019 caste.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>It is followed by a <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>claim to a higher position in the caste hierarchy<\/strong><\/span> than traditionally concealed to the claimant caste by the local community. Such claims are made over a period of time, sometimes a generation or two before they are conceded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Main_body\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Main body: <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">It is an<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <strong>endogenous source of social change<\/strong><\/span>. This term used by M N Srinivas to describe <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>the process of cultural and social mobility in the traditional social structure of Indian society.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The impact of Sanskritisation is manifold. Its influence can be seen in language, literature, ideology, music, dance, drama, style of life and ritual.<\/strong> <\/span>The process gained momentum after the arrival of the British, as means of communication hastened the process and its impact was felt in even the remotest corners of villages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Sanskritisation suggests a process whereby people want to improve their status through adoption of names and customs of culturally high-placed groups.<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <strong>The reference model is usually financially better off as well.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In many instances <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>highly Sanskritised caste was dominant, the culture of the entire region underwent a certain degree of Sanskritisation<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Some suitable illustrations of Sanskritization:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Vegetarianism:<\/strong><\/span> One clear example of Sanskritization is the adoption of vegetarianism by people belonging to the so-called &#8220;low castes&#8221; who are traditionally not averse to non-vegetarian food. This is done in emulation of the practice of twice-born castes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Arya Samaj: <\/strong><\/span>The Hindu Jat in rural North India did Sanskritization with the help of Arya Samaj as a part of a social upliftment effort.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Education:<\/span> <\/strong>Education is another way in which lower castes can attempt to raise their social status through Sanskritization. <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>By acquiring education, they can gain knowledge of the customs and rituals of the upper castes and emulate them.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Occupation:<\/strong><\/span> Another way in <span style=\"color: #000000;\">w<strong><em>hich lower castes can attempt to raise their social status <\/em><\/strong><\/span>is by taking up occupations traditionally associated with the upper castes. For example, a lower caste person may become a priest or a teacher.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Criticism of Sanskritization<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">N. Majumdar argues that in regions where the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>non-Sanskritic castes<\/em><\/strong><\/span> were dominant, it was their influence that was stronger. This can be termed the process of <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>de-Sanskritiation<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em><\/span>There were other regional variations too. In <strong>Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir culturally Sanskritic influence was never very strong<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Other critics argue that <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Srinivas overemphasised on mobility<\/strong>.<\/span> Mobility in caste structure is very difficult , hardly any change in status is observed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">With Sanskritisation, <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>evils of higher caste people such as a patriarchal dominance<\/strong>,<\/span> dowry system, <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>conspicuous consumption also permeated to lower castes.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Harold Gould<\/span> <\/strong>believes that lower caste people imitate the way of life of higher caste not because of cultural aspect but socio-political and economic dominance that higher caste possesses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Conclusion:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Sanskritization as a process of social change in contemporary Indian society has lost much of its relevance due to <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>reservation policy, rise of Dalit consciousness, Westernization replacing Sanskritization, democratic polity among other factors<\/strong>. <strong>Despite such changes and much criticism<\/strong>,<\/span> the concept <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>still stands tall for providing an unconventional perspective of Indian society<\/strong><\/span> in general and caste system in particular.
