against tradition, holism against individualism, hierarchy against equality, purity against pollution and status against power<\/strong>.<\/span> Dumont emphasised on ideology because it is also reflected through ancient texts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">According to<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> Louis Dumont<\/strong><\/span> the Brahmins,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <strong>assigned with the priestly functions<\/strong>,<\/span> occupied the top rank in the social hierarchy and <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>were considered \u2018pure\u2019 as compared to other castes, whereas the untouchables, being \u2018impure\u2019<\/strong>,<\/span> and segregated outside the village.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Untouchables were not allowed to draw water from the same wells from which the Brahmins did so. Besides this, they did not have any access to Hindu temples, and suffered from various other disabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><em>He conceptualized caste as opposition of pure and impure. Three elements are central to his analysis-<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Separation <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>on the basis of rules of the caste <\/strong><\/span>in matters of marriage and contact, whether direct or indirect (food)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Interdependent of work or division of labour<\/strong>,<\/span> each group having, in theory or by tradition, a profession from which their members can depart only within certain limits;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Finally,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <strong><em>gradation of status or hierarchy<\/em><\/strong>,<\/span> which ranks the groups as relatively superior or inferior to one another.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">He identified a number of pure and impure practices which are attached with notions of purity and impurity. <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Endogamy, cleanliness, vegetarianism are considered pure and superior. Accordingly, impure occupations are separated from the class of sacred\/pure occupations.<\/span> <\/strong>Pure and impure are attached to not only occupation, but to the entire structure of ideas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>Limitation of idea of binary opposition in understanding of caste as propounded by<\/strong> <strong>Louis Dumont<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Yogendra Singh<\/strong><\/span> argued that <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dumont failed to grasp change brought in Indian society<\/strong> <strong><em>by a modern democratic and egalitarian state<\/em><\/strong><\/span> which is based on the modern constitution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>His binary perspective of purity and pollution<\/strong><\/span> also does not hold true in a lot of contexts, for instance <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>tribal believe in sacredness instead of purity and pollution<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Harold Gould believes that lower caste people imitate the way of life of higher castes<\/strong><\/span> not because of cultural aspects of purity and pollution <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>but socio-political and economic dominance that higher castes possess.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Conclusion:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Caste is not an unchanging structure. Simultaneously, it is also true that caste has religious, cultural as well as ritualistic backing.
