Shutting down specific social media platforms or apps may be aimed at controlling the spread of information during sensitive events or to address concerns related to privacy and times, serif;\">Moreover, internet shutdowns have tangible economic repercussions, impacting both individuals and the country as a whole.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">They directly contribute to economic losses and unemployment, particularly affecting those who rely on online platforms for their livelihoods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Furthermore, they disrupt digital payments, online services, <strong>e-commerce<\/strong>, education, healthcare, and other sectors that heavily depend on internet connectivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">For instance, during the <strong>six-month<\/strong> communication blockade in Kashmir in 2019, over five lakh people lost their jobs, and the region&#8217;s businesses and economic activities suffered severe disruptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><strong>Internet shutdowns<\/strong> also deepen the digital divide, disproportionately affecting marginalized groups such as rural populations, women, minorities, <strong>low-income<\/strong> households, and individuals with disabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Such measures contradict the government&#8217;s vision of a <strong>Digital India<\/strong> that seeks to empower citizens through digital public infrastructure and services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: be employed as a measure to counter xenophobic tendencies and misinformation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Authorities may resort to <strong>internet shutdowns<\/strong> as a last option to address mass protests and civil unrest by preventing the spread of provocative messages and rumors that may incite violence and disorder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">In extreme circumstances where social media platforms become sources of disruption and confusion, suspending <strong>internet services<\/strong> might become necessary to restore peace and order.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><strong>Internet shutdowns<\/strong> violate fundamental rights and hinder people&#8217;s ability to communicate, express themselves, learn, and access information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">These shutdowns also have adverse effects on essential services like education, <strong>healthcare, and public services<\/strong> that heavily rely on internet connectivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">There is no conclusive evidence proving that<strong> internet shutdowns<\/strong> effectively preserve or restore public order.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">In fact, such measures can lead to increased resentment, frustration, and anger among the public.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><strong>The government ought to regularly conduct impact assessments of internet shutdowns on human rights, democracy, and development.<\/strong> Additionally, it should provide compensation to those who experience losses or damages as a result of internet shutdowns, with
