color: #000000;\">Phenomenology in sociology is a branch of European philosophy which was first developed by <strong>Edmund Husserl<\/strong> (1859-1938), and which was developed along more sociological lines <strong>by Alfred Schutz (1899-1959)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Phenomenologists try to understand the meaning of phenomena or things, rather than explaining how they came into existence. It is a radical constructionist perspective which sees knowledge as a social construct.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Husserl argued that <strong>the classification of phenomena<\/strong> was entirely a product of the human mind, and could not be evaluated in terms of whether it was true or false. He did not deny the existence of physical objects beyond and outside the human mind, but he argued that, <strong>since people could only come into contact with them through their senses, they could never be sure about their true nature.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Schutz&#8217;s main contribution was to insist that the <strong>way that humans classified and attached<\/strong> meaning to the outside world was not a purely individual process. Humans developed what he called <strong>\u2018typifications\u2019<\/strong> the concepts attached to classes of things that are experienced.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">By the use of <strong>typifications, people are able to communicate <\/strong>with others on the basis of the assumption that they see the world in the same way. Gradually. a member of society builds up a stock of what Schutz called <strong>&#8216;common-sense knowledge&#8217;, <\/strong>which is shared with other members of society and allows humans to live and communicate together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Although <strong>Schutz stresses that knowledge is shared, he does not think it is fixed and unchanging. Indeed,<\/strong> common- sense knowledge is constantly modified in the course of human interaction. Schutz acknowledged <strong>that each individual has a unique biography, and interprets<\/strong> and experiences the world in a slightly different way; but the existence of a stock of common-sense knowledge allows humans to understand, at least partly, each other&#8217;s actions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Phenomenologist do not believe that it is possible objectively to measure and classify the world. To phenomenologists, human beings make sense of the world by imposing meanings and classifications upon it. These meanings and classifications make up social reality. <strong>There is no objective reality beyond these subjective meanings.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Benton and Craib: <\/strong>It involves a suspension of our everyday, common-sense beliefs and an attempt to describe how we come by those beliefs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Example: <\/strong>Thus, for example, in <strong>Cicourel&#8217;s study of juvenile justice<\/strong> ; police and juvenile officers had the problem <strong>of classifying the behaviour<\/strong> of juveniles into the categories: <strong>delinquent and non-delinquent<\/strong>. <strong>Cicourel <\/strong>did not find this process to be objective: it largely depended on the stereotypes of the <strong>&#8216;typical delinquent&#8217;<\/strong> held by the officials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Phenomenologists believe that <strong>the problem of classification is universal<\/strong>, and not unique to particular types of data. All people, all of the time, make decisions about how to classify things, and these decisions are the product of social processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Furthermore, to phenomenologist, <strong>there is no way of choosing between different systems of classification and seeing one as superior to another<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Phenomenologists believe that sociologies <strong>should limit themselves to understanding the meanings and classifications <\/strong>which people use to give order to, and make sense of, the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"width: 810px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-15301-1\" width=\"810\" height=\"1440\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SHORTS-FORMAT-1-final.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SHORTS-FORMAT-1-final.mp4\">https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/SHORTS-FORMAT-1-final.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Phenomenology in sociology is an example of a sociological approach that sees the social world, and knowledge about it, as a social construction.
