India-China relations have raised concerns about the possibility of a future conflict between the two nations.<\/p>\n<p>Recent strains\u00a0 in India and China&#8217;s\u00a0 relationship has been fuelled by recent Chinese provocations, including the allocation of names to places in Arunachal Pradesh, denial of visas to Indian media personnel, and President&#8217;s statements on preparing for war.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is the recent cause of concern? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>India-China relations have gone through cycles of conflict and cooperation over nearly 75 years.<\/li>\n<li>The most serious recent episodes of conflict were in Galwan Valley in Ladakh in 2020 and in\u00a0Tawang\u00a0in Arunachal Pradesh in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>Observers on both sides of the border\u2014the Line of Actual Control (LAC)\u2014agree that the number of serious military confrontations has increased since 2013.<\/li>\n<li>The border between India and China is\u00a0not clearly demarcated throughout\u00a0and there is\u00a0no mutually agreed\u00a0Line of Actual Control (LAC)\u00a0along certain stretches<\/li>\n<li>Partnerships with each other&#8217;s main enemies, including the Soviet Union\/Russia and the United States, have prevented them from becoming strategic partners and cooperating on strategic matters<\/li>\n<li>The growing power gap between China and India, with China&#8217;s GDP being five times that of India&#8217;s, has made it difficult for India to be accommodative without appearing to surrender.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Imbalance of trade relations <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>India&#8217;s bilateral trade deficit with China is large and growing. In 2021-22, India&#8217;s trade deficit with China was around $73.3 billion, and it is expected to cross $100 billion in FY23.<\/li>\n<li>India&#8217;s\u00a0trade deficit with China accounts for 38-40%\u00a0of India&#8217;s total merchandise trade deficit in the post-Covid era.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Reasons for Intriguing Trade Relations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>China&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drishtiias.com\/daily-updates\/daily-news-analysis\/gdp-and-gva#:~:text=Calculation%20of%20GDP%3A,spending%20%2B%20(exports%2Dimports)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GDP <\/a>growth rate has slowed down\u00a0since the\u00a0Covid crisis,\u00a0and the country has shifted its policies more towards domestic consumption.<\/li>\n<li>However, this policy shift has not affected Chinese exports to India.<\/li>\n<li>India withdrew from the\u00a0Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership\u00a0(RCEP), which puts India at a disadvantage compared to other FTA partners of China.<\/li>\n<li>India imports most of the\u00a0Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs)\u00a0it uses in its pharmaceutical industry from China. The\u00a0cost of Chinese APIs is cheaper than the Indian ones\u00a0even on the Indian market.<\/li>\n<li>The depth of the problem was revealed during the Covid-19 pandemic when due to travel restrictions, exports of Chinese APIs to India were temporarily restricted and consequently India had to cut its exports of APIs<\/li>\n<li>China has become a manufacturing hub for the world, with a vast industrial base that enables it to produce goods at a lower cost than India. This has led to China exporting a wide range of products to India, from electronic goods to textiles.<\/li>\n<li>India is heavily dependent on Chinese goods, as it imports a significant amount of raw materials and finished products from China.<\/li>\n<li>This includes items such as\u00a0machinery, electronics, and chemicals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>There is need to reanalyze relations between two
