A boy with good education and employment becomes much sought after match for a girl. If anything has kept some pace with wider social and economic changes in India, it is the increase in dowry in terms of cash and material goods.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3i71xaburhd42.cloudfront.net\/1b97b7f3d3f01dbc58505a78d60724ba15669ed8\/11-Figure1-1.png\" alt=\"Women&amp;#39;s risk and well-being at the intersection of dowry, patriarchy, and  conservation: The gendering of human\u2013wildlife conflict | Semantic Scholar\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>What is Dowry?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is not easy to define dowry as it does not refer to cash and material goods alone. It has been defined as a share of a daughter or a sister in parental property, given to her at the time of her marriage. But dowry is not really given as an amount equivalent to a daughter\u2019s share vis-a-vis her brothers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The development in the <strong>patriarchal societies<\/strong> has been such women have become weaker section of human population. Her functions have been relegated to mere procreation and attending the household chores. The <strong><u>patriarchal culture dilutes freedom and equality of women in all walks of life.<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In <strong>South India<\/strong> it is called as <strong>stridhan,<\/strong> and in North India it is considered as a <strong>gift or dahej<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is also a fact that since a girl joins her husband\u2019s house in Hindu patriarchal society, she is given compensation in forms of dowry.<\/li>\n<li>As per ancient custom, <strong>Kanyadan <\/strong>was followed by the ritual of <strong>Vardakshina,<\/strong> which was a nominal amount decided unilaterally by the girl\u2019s father according to his financial condition,<strong>yathashakti.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Relevant for SOCIOLOGY Syllabus Systems of Kinship in India: Family and marriage in India.
