color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">So does this mean Indians are especially lucky, and get to experience the \u2018happily ever after\u2019 more often than other countries? Is this proof that the arranged marriage system is truly the best in the world?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Cheery as these possibilities are, they are far from the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Here_are_five_reasons_the_low_divorce_rate_is_not_a_good_thing\"><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Here are five reasons the low divorce rate is not a good thing:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>1.). Women have no voice<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">According to a study,\u00a0within India, divorce rates are the lowest in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan, where patriarchy still has a stranglehold on society, while divorces are higher in more liberal north-eastern states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">This clearly shows that divorce rates are low because even today, too many women are not in a position to speak up against their families, or support themselves financially and emotionally if they choose to walk out of oppressive marriages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>2.). Sanskar over happiness<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Of course, it\u2019s not just women who suffer bad marriages. Indians are just never taught to prioritise individual happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The family\u2019s \u2018reputation\u2019, the \u2018feelings\u2019 of the entire ecosystem around us are supposed to be more important than following our heart. Thus, divorce comes with the tremendous stigma of selfishly abandoning your familial duties, and damaging your family name in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Of course, gender plays a role here too \u2014 the woman who couldn\u2019t \u2018keep her man happy\u2019 is both to be pitied and censured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Important to note here is that according to census data,\u00a0more women\u00a0declared themselves divorced than men, which shows that men find it much easier to remarry than women.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>3.). Long legal process<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">There are practical difficulties too. India is among the most progressive modern democracies as far as the law on divorce is concerned \u2014 the Hindu Code Bill, passed in Parliament\u00a0in the very first decade\u00a0after our Independence, granted divorce and remarriage rights to men and women equally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">But great intentions are ruined by bureaucratic inefficiencies. The legal system in India is so\u00a0slow and long-drawn\u00a0that simply initiating the process of divorce is intimidating. The legal battle, with adjourned hearings and perennial staff crunch in courts, takes up a lot of time \u2014 and a lot of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>4.). Morality over legality<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Even if you do choose to take the legal plunge, divorces in India are not easy to come by. Judges, after all, are products of our society, and their\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/society\/divorce-vs-sanskar\/article19980952.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">focus is on\u00a0<\/a>reconciliation rather than separation. Countless women have tales to narrate of judges asking them to \u2018think of their family and kids\u2019, despite presenting evidence of cruelty and abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Couples seeking divorce through mutual consent are sent for\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/society\/divorce-vs-sanskar\/article19980952.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noindex noopener noreferrer\">endless rounds of<\/a>\u00a0counselling and mediation. Even if we assume the judges are well-intentioned, they ignore what two adults want for themselves, and force them to go through a process that delays their attempts to build a new life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>5.). Religion<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The last, but perhaps the most important cause behind the longevity of Indian marriages is religion. Hinduism is the dominant religion in India, where marriage is a sacred bond that is supposed to outlive rebirths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The dissolution of marriage like a civil contract is a distinctly modern concept for a lot of Indians, and is gaining acceptance very slowly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;
