{"id":12379,"date":"2021-07-06T14:45:02","date_gmt":"2021-07-06T09:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/?p=12379"},"modified":"2023-04-11T18:16:19","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T12:46:19","slug":"zero-hunger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triumphias.com\/blog\/zero-hunger\/","title":{"rendered":"ZERO HUNGER"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>ZERO HUNGER<\/h1>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">Syllabus:\u00a0\u00a0GS Paper \u2013 II (Social Justice) &#8211; Issues relating to Poverty and Hunger.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>State of Hunger in India<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)<\/strong> estimates in\u00a0<strong>The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2020<\/strong>\u00a0report, 189.2 million people, that is 14% of the population, are undernourished in India.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"697\"><strong>Definitions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hunger\u00a0<\/strong>is usually understood to refer to the distress associated with a lack of sufficient calories.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Undernutrition<\/strong>\u00a0goes beyond calories and signifies deficiencies in\u00a0<strong>any or all of the following<\/strong>: energy, protein, and\/or essential vitamins and minerals. Undernutrition is the result of inadequate intake of food in terms of either quantity or quality, poor utilisation of nutrients due to infections or other illnesses, or a combination of these factors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Malnutrition<\/strong>\u00a0refers more broadly to both\u00a0 undernutrition (problems caused by deficiencies) and\u00a0 over nutrition (problems caused by unbalanced diets, such\u00a0 as consuming too many calories in relation to requirements\u00a0 with or without low intake of micronutrient-rich foods).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Global Hunger Index<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report, \u201chunger\u201d refers to the index based on four component indicators.\u00a0 Taken together, the component indicators reflect deficiencies in calories as well as in micronutrients.<\/li>\n<li>Four component indicators are:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Share of Undernourished Population<\/li>\n<li>Child Wasting: the share of children under the age of five who are wasted (CWA)<\/li>\n<li>Child Stunting: the share of children under the age of five who are stunted (CST)<\/li>\n<li>Child Mortality: the mortality rate of children under the age of five (CM)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Index Values less than 10 reflect \u2018low hunger\u2019, values from 20 to 34.9 indicate \u2018serious hunger\u2019; values from 35 to 49.9 are \u2018alarming\u2019; and values of 50 or more are \u2018extremely alarming\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-60743042,quality-100\/.jpg\" alt=\"Zero hunger goal to kick off from October 16 - The Economic Times\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>India\u2019s Progress in GHI<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the Global Hunger Index Report 2019,\u00a0<\/strong>India was ranked at\u00a0<strong>102<\/strong>\u00a0out of 117 countries<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In the Global Hunger Index Report 2020,\u00a0<\/strong>India ranked<strong>\u00a094\u00a0<\/strong>with a Global Hunger Index of 27.2.<\/li>\n<li>India has made considerable progress over the years which is evident from its GHI Scores \u2013 48.1 in 1990 to 27.2 in 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.publichealthnotes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/stunting-infographics.jpg1_.jpg\" alt=\"stunting infographics.jpg1 - Public Health Notes\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps Taken<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Health Mission (NHM)<\/strong>\u00a0includes programmatic components such as health system strengthening, Reproductive Maternal-Neonatal-Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH A), and prevention and treatment of communicable and non-communicable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SDG India Index &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>The NITI Agog has brought out SDG India Index &amp; Dashboard 2019-20 which measure the progress achieved and distance to be covered by the States\/UTs in their journey towards meeting the targets, using the SDG India Index, covering 16 out of 17 SDGs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>SDGs having a bearing on poverty, hunger and nutrition are:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>SDG 1. No Poverty SDG 2. Zero Hunger.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To measure India\u2019s performance towards the Goal of Zero Hunger, seven national-level indicators have been identified, which capture three out of the eight SDG targets for 2030 outlined under this Goal.<\/li>\n<li>In term of SDG Index Score for Goal 2, Goa and Chandigarh are the top-performing among States and UTs, respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Under the \u201c<strong>Antyodaya Anna Yojana\u201d (AAY),<\/strong>\u00a0the poorest from amongst the BPL families are entitled to 35 kg of food grains per month at more subsidised rates.<\/li>\n<li>Under the\u00a0<strong>Integrated Child Development Services<\/strong>\u00a0children in the age range 6 months to 6 years, pregnant women and lactating mothers are provided access to nutritious food.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mid-day meal (MDM)<\/strong>\u00a0aimed at achieving better nutrition standards for school going children.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The National Nutrition Mission (Poshan Abhiyaan)<\/strong>\u00a0to reduce stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia (among young children, women and adolescent girls), and low birth weight by 2 per cent, 2 per cent, 3 per cent, and 2 per cent per annum, respectively. It targets to bring down stunting among children in the age group 0-6 years from 38.4 per cent to 25 per cent by 2022.<\/li>\n<li>Strategy for doubling farmers\u2019 income focuses on\u00a0<strong>seven growth factors<\/strong>: improved crop productivity, increased livestock productivity, cost-effective production processes, increased cropping intensity, crop diversification favouring high-value crops, access to better prices and shifting to the non-farm occupation.<\/li>\n<li>221 million\u00a0<strong>soil health cards<\/strong>\u00a0have been distributed so far to farmers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee\u00a0 Yojana (PMKSY)<\/strong>\u00a0focuses on improved water efficiency\u00a0 with the motto of \u201cHar Khet Ko Paani\u201d and \u201cPer drop more\u00a0 crop\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)<\/strong>\u00a0provides better insurance coverage and agricultural credit at a reduced rate of 4 per cent per annum to farmers.<\/li>\n<li>Minimum support prices for all kharif and rabi crops have been increased at least by 150 per cent of the cost of production.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pradhan Mantri Kisan Scheme<\/strong>\u00a0has been initiated to extend the payment of INR 6,000 per year to every farmer in the country, which provides a further boost to their income.<\/li>\n<li>Under\u00a0<strong>Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana<\/strong>, financing of mega food parks, infrastructure of\u00a0 agro-processing clusters, and integrated cold chain and\u00a0 value addition infrastructure are undertaken.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ZERO HUNGER Syllabus:\u00a0\u00a0GS Paper \u2013 II (Social Justice) &#8211; Issues relating to Poverty and Hunger.
